We are in the State of Illinois. Why worry about profitability. This is like a Madigan budget.

After looking at it more closely you could even make the case that it is football that is most important to profit.

It absolutely is. I remember reading somewhere that even Kentucky's football team is more profitable than it's mens basketball team.

I think the case is closed. Football is king. Men's basketball is a distant second. Nothing else matters.

Yeah, pretty sure thats the case. People here care about football for about 3-4 games. The basketball team starts playing right around the same time the football team starts getting its !!! beat in conference play, and from that point on football is irrelevant.

This somewhat old article may be what you're referring to.

The 2012-13 athletic budget approved in the summer by the UK Board of Trustees shows that football is slated to produce $27.6 million in revenue while spending $9.5 million — for a profit of $18.1 million.
By comparison, men’s basketball, even coming off a national championship, is projected to produce $20.8 million in revenue, while spending $12.6 million — for an $8.2 million profit.
Those are the only two profitable programs for the university. The other 20 sports lose a combined $11.6 million, according to the 2012-13 budget.

Looks like the new AD will have some work to do. Not surprising that football and men's basketball lead, but boy is women's basketball costing us.

The team finished with a $2,571,875 deficit, earning $584,398 and having to spend $3,156,273. Since 2011, the program finished each year with over-a-million-dollar deficit, totaling up to $10,466572 during the five-year span.

INCREDIBLE....

Well, they are entitled to whatever the men's team has (which they should be, IMHO), so it's better to think of the Women's and Men's basketball programs as one program.

Move

Please end the madness. I keep coming back every day to see if today is the day some news breaks. I knew when I heard it wasn't on the schedule for Thursday's meeting that it was unlikely. But I thought maybe they would have an unannounced private meeting after the regular meeting. What is the problem that they can't make a decision on this? Are they waiting on someone to say yes? If so move on.

Also, I realize they will give him a year. But the buyout on Cubit makes me think that he is gone soon. If there was someone they wanted this year, I think they could still do that when a new AD is hired. But I assume after next year. Unless he wins 9 or 10 games that Cubit is gone. They need to get an AD hired quickly. (I have been saying that for a couple months)

^ That buyout exists so the new AD can hire hid guy on arrival. NOBODY expects Cubit to make it two years.

I'm not real sure that the women b-ball team using the SFC impacts finances very much, but I have long thought they should play their games at Huff Hall. There would be a far better atmosphere there which could lead to a bigger fan following like volleyball enjoys.

I think you are right conceptually. SFC is just way too big and empty for women's basketball. But when the men were looking for a home this fall, as the renovations continued, we were told that they don't have a basketball floor for Huff. I assume that the UI doesn't feel it is worthwhile to get a separate floor for basketball for Huff.

I'm curious what people think the action plan should be for the new AD. It's a big mess to clean up, so where do you start? What is the day 1 agenda and top priority?

Find a football coach.

Find a football coach.

I don't disagree, but it isn't the most pressing issue for a new AD. I don't think they will eat the full cost of BC's contract he just signed to look for a new coach in Feb/March right before spring ball.

I think the evaluation of the MBB program is first and foremost, then working back channels to create lists of coaching replacements for football and mbb, if this AD candidate doesn't already have a short list prepared.

Is that realistic given the time of year and options available? It might be, but who would you go after?

Without a large contract /buyout I wouldn't worry to much about Cubit being retained. If he's going to be retained he is going to have to earn it with a combination of wins and recruiting. If he wins 7 or 8 and is lining up a recruiting class that would be in the top half of the Big Ten, then I think you extend him. That would be big time. If he wins 9 and has a top 9 class that would be tough call. Heck, if he won 6 with a top 5 class I would extend him. If we want to move up in the Big we need to start stacking classes that are clearly better the teams in our division. Which is doable since the recruiting powerhouses are in the East.

I think Cubit stays for the first year - it's late in the game for someone new to come in at this point.

I just want to have an Athletic Director already. It would be nice if any of our programs had any sort of direction. Is that so much to ask? :chief:

Title 9 forbids using Huff for the women and the SFC for the men. Too dissimilar and therefore discriminatory.

You could hold a WBB game in either venue in Illinois and no one would know. Or care.

They do have direction...it's not just not the direction any of us want/expect from a Big Ten university in the 5th largest state in the union :thumb:

Unbelievable that Mike Thomas has all successful hires at Cincy and then hires three absolute program wreckers here. Just crazy.

Agreed, which goes to show you that just because they were great somewhere else is no guarantee that it'll work here.

I'm not sure if there's actually Title 9 implications - that seems like a pretty absurd result. Regardless, I'm pretty sure they've made enough changes to Huff that it's solely for volleyball and gymnastics now. I don't think they can even fit a basketball floor anymore with the current setup.

This is way down the horizon, but the next AD needs to look harder at an "Olympic" sports facility on the athletic campus. A 5,000 seat smaller venue for women's bball, wrestling, hockey, etc. It would take decades of success in women's bball for SFC to be a good place to play.
