We are in the State of Illinois. Why worry about profitability. .
After looking at it more closely you could even make the case that it is football that is most important to profit.
It absolutely is. I remember reading somewhere that even Kentucky's football team is more profitable than it's mens basketball team.

The 2012-13 athletic budget approved in the summer by the UK Board of Trustees shows that football is slated to produce $27.6 million in revenue while spending $9.5 million — for a profit of $18.1 million.
By comparison, men’s basketball, even coming off a national championship, is projected to produce $20.8 million in revenue, while spending $12.6 million — for an $8.2 million profit.
Those are the only two profitable programs for the university. The other 20 sports lose a combined $11.6 million, according to the 2012-13 budget.
Looks like the new AD will have some work to do. Not surprising that football and men's basketball lead, but boy is women's basketball costing us.

The team finished with a $2,571,875 deficit, earning $584,398 and having to spend $3,156,273. Since 2011, the program finished each year with over-a-million-dollar deficit, totaling up to $10,466572 during the five-year span.
INCREDIBLE....

I'm not real sure that the women b-ball team using the SFC impacts finances very much, but I have long thought they should play their games at Huff Hall. There would be a far better atmosphere there which could lead to a bigger fan following like volleyball enjoys.
^ That buyout exists so the new AD can hire hid guy on arrival. NOBODY expects Cubit to make it two years.
I'm curious what people think the action plan should be for the new AD. It's a big mess to clean up, so where do you start? What is the day 1 agenda and top priority?
Find a football coach.
I think you are right conceptually. SFC is just way too big and empty for women's basketball. But when the men were looking for a home this fall, as the renovations continued, we were told that they don't have a basketball floor for Huff. I assume that the UI doesn't feel it is worthwhile to get a separate floor for basketball for Huff.
I think Cubit stays for the first year - it's late in the game for someone new to come in at this point.
I just want to have an Athletic Director already. It would be nice if any of our programs had any sort of direction. Is that so much to ask?

Unbelievable that Mike Thomas has all successful hires at Cincy and then hires three absolute program wreckers here. Just crazy.
Title 9 forbids using Huff for the women and the SFC for the men. Too dissimilar and therefore discriminatory.
