I've read almost everything posted there and never once did I get the impression that what he was pitching. He said from the Illini side they were all in on him but always made it clear they would have to convince George to leave Colorado.

That is my recollection as well. Shannon Ryan is on target on her reporting that's for sure - even though we may not all like the content, it's hard to argue with her accuracy. I think Werner is right up there as well - very cautious. The rest? I don't believe a thing they say.

as an illini through and through, trust me, it that is all it takes for you to leave the fanbase, then you weren't really a true fan. True fans stick out the low times and party in the high times. True fans know there will be both. True fans always want the best, but also accept those that failed. It's hard for many to understand. I get it. :thumb: I loved Dee Brown who played for the national championship. I also supported Brooks Taylor and Chester Frazier who did not. I will pat every guy on this current team on the back, even Jaylon Tate and Mav Morgan and give them my support. I will support John Groce when nobody does because he is an illini....plain and simple.

Can I question him, them or the whole shabang..Damn straight I can. But I will never be an EX-FAN. NO WAY..NO HOW! :shield:

EX fan= no fan. :)

Do you quit being a dad when your kid is struggling? Do you quit being a husband when your wife is going through hard times? Do you quit on your dog when he poops on the floor? Did we quit when the germans bombed pearl harbor? Hell no!

Disclaimer- This post is 100% the way I feel and 5% in jest. Nothing personal to the previous poster of whom I quoted. :chief:
Agree 100% with you.

Setting aside the hyperbole in my post, I wonder how many fans still watch or attend every single game. I used to watch every minute of every football or basketball game I could see or attend (and the occasional non-revenue sport too) - for 35+ years. I no longer do that - I catch a few minutes here and there, but don't really care if I miss a game now. It's just not fun to watch football or basketball anymore. I can take a few down years of course and have been through many without issue, but we're the least competitive we've been since the early 1970s with no hope for improvement. I still support the team though and wish the guys the best. Do I owe the U of I more as a fan, or does the U of I owe me - an alum - a better attempt at putting a product out that doesn't embarrass the University that I attended and dearly love? The University of Illinois is going to send a very strong signal with this AD hire. We'll know how much they care about athletics when we see who the new AD is. I wonder if the administration cares as much as we do.

My immediate thought is...no. However, we will see very shortly. They announce Tiley, and I might start to look more closely to see if they are hiding behind a username on this board.

Name the 5 worst (non-Illini) Big Ten football coaches you can remember.

Okay, now name the 5 worst AD's.

See? This is not as pivotal as we're making it out to be. Tom Michael could hire our Barry Alvarez.

He could also very well hire our Tim Beckm... wait... :(

Oh, I understand, but interest comes and goes. The question is "did the administration ever care as much as we do?".... or do they just get lucky every once in ahwile? After all, they run a University first.

Spot on EJ33. I'm tired of my financial support to the DIA paying for blowouts that no longer work for us, not to mention the less than stellar performance of our two big revenue sports. We absolutely deserve better.

Honestly, the University doesn't owe us anything. They're a top ten public university in the US despite this animosity. We are not entitled to anything. I got a degree that has supported me so far and I'm grateful for it. That's it. Illinois sports and the university owe me nothing.

I too have benefited greatly from my UofI degree and am extremely grateful for it. But note that I said we deserve more from the DIA, who obtain their funding from donors like myself (and hopefully you too). While a significant portion of our DIA donations support student scholarships, a significant portion also pays for ADs and Head Coaches who no longer work for the DIA. If we're paying for it, we have a right to expect excellence.

Understood. I certainly didn't intend to come off as combative. I give for the purpose of supporting the school, but I see your point

So, back on topic, how long do you think until they make an announcement? I'm hoping by Friday.

Just because football coaches have a much higher public profile than their ADs doesn't mean that hiring the right person isn't hugely important.

The wrong person could get lucky and hire a Barry Alvarez, just like the right person could hire the wrong person. I'd still rather have an excellent person making the decision.

I'm going with a leak of the decision is out there tomorrow night, official announcement from the University at some point on Friday.

I do not think they would announce it on signing day. But... who knows.

Tiley would be an unconventional choice (as he has no AD experience) but would likely work out very well for us. I think he'd do well with the hostile Chicago press.

#1,919
So have we confirmed it was an in-person interview, or is that still open to speculation? If in-person, then I think Tiley's the guy, and the rest was purely for perception purposes so no one thought they didn't do an "exhaustive" search of all types of candidates (other ADs w/ Illini ties, mid-major ADs, etc.). Given his credentials, I can't imagine him doing an in-person interview, it getting leaked publicly, and then him not being offered the job. The other candidates it wouldn't raise an eyebrow if they interviewed but didn't get it - but Tiley it might.

I'm hoping today will be quiet due to signing day festivities, then tomorrow we hear some rumblings, with a press conference Friday introducing Tiley. #Fingerscrossed

My money is on absolute silence until late next week, then a report saying a Tiley deal blew up over a lowball offer, and that Barb Wilson, the search committee, and the BoT are bitterly divided over who to choose from the rest of the group.

and are still accepting applications.

Ill say we'll get something like Barb hasn't had the time to think about any of this, but maybe tomorrow she might after lunch, as long as she's not too busy with other things.

It was in person.

Yep. Which puts me in "Tiley or Bust" territory.

If we end up with Tiley, a guy I was hoping would take the job when Guenther left, I'll forget a lot of what happened over the past 6-7 months and be excited to follow Illini sports again.

If we don't, I'll probably speed up and complete the journey I'm currently on towards total apathy.
