WIFE: "Are you sleeping with your co-worker?"

YOU: "She hasn't called me and I haven't talked to anyone. I'd be lying if I didn't say at one point in my life she wasn't my dream situation. But I love it here with you and I'm excited about what we've accomplished since we've been married as well as what the immediate future holds. But I just think it's way too early to be talking about anything right now in regard to me ever sleeping with my co-worker."

Exactly. What do people expect him to say?

Really only two choices, right?
1) I have no interest in another job and will not be a candidate
2) Something like what he said, which leaves door open.

People are/should be happy that he seems to be in the 2nd camp

Exactly. What do people expect him to say?

Agreed. Has to hedge his bets. Sounds like he would be interested if Illinois came calling and, to me, made that very clear in his statement. At the same time if they don't come calling he wants to make sure Colorado knows he appreciates them too.

Now, as one poster already stated, does the UI administration have enough competency to go get this guy? While there are other candidates that I'm sure would do a fine job, this one just seems to make a lot of sense for a variety of reasons.

Clearly he's a smart guy. Even in the worst case scenario for us, him having no interest in Illinois, he can still make these comments to get himself a raise from CU.

I don't think he's saying this to get a raise. He's only been there 2 years and he's making $750,000 per plus bonuses.

True. I think he knew exactly what he was saying. His comments leave it open to pretty much every possible outcome. He could be leveraging for a raise. He could really want the Illini job. He could really want to stay. He may not know what he wants yet. His comments leave it open to anything and he has plenty of time to decide.

That's about the best news on Illini athletics I've read in awhile...

You don't tell your wife how great she is and how much you love her and then leave in a month. Not saying he won't it's just tacky.

Yeah but this isn't his wife, this is his job. When you're interviewing for jobs, whatever job you're interviewing for is "your dream job" or "the perfect fit" because you don't want your potential or current employer to think you're not interested.

The fact that he dodged this question like a champion is at least mildly encouraging

So, can we send up Jerry Colangelo to preliminary negotiate a deal, so that George still has deniability? Find out what he wants to make all of this work?

Bear with me for a second as I haven't gone through an AD search during my being closely in tuned with everything Illini athletics - What is Jerry Colangelo's tie to us/these processes? His name keeps being brought up, and I don't know why. I know who he is (at least, I know his ties to USA basketball), but not his tie to Illinois. thanks!

Wikipedia is my friend...

Early life[edit]

Colangelo was born and raised in Chicago Heights, Illinois to an Italian-American working class family.[3] He played basketball and baseball for Bloom Township High School. Colangelo attended University of Kansas and played basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks, but transferred to the University of Illinois after prospective teammate Wilt Chamberlain left. He played basketball for the Illinois Fighting Illini, earned All-Big Ten honors, and captained the Illini as a senior. He was later inducted into the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame. Colangelo also played two years of baseball at Illinois.[4] In 1962, he graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in physical education.[3]
In his autobiography, How You Play the Game, Colangelo tells of working after graduating college at the House of Charles, a tuxedo rental shop in Chicago Heights.[5]

You claim to be closely in tuned with everything Illini athletics yet don't know anything about Jerry Colangelo? Yikes

For the uninformed, can someone explain why George is getting so much attention, besides the fact that he's an Illini Guy and a current AD? What are some of his accomplishments that make him such an intriguing choice?

From another article on him:

His is a unique background for a college AD. Given its difficulty in raising money through the years, CU athletics needed a unique AD.

Successful runs in nonprofit work (as CEO of the Fore!Kids Foundation), golf (as executive vice president of the PGA Tour and president of the Champions Tour) and MLB (with the Rangers), suggest George's business skills are transferrable.

New article from old friend Paul Klee:

George graduated from and played football at the University of Illinois. He has three sisters and two brothers who live in Illinois. He tries to get back at least once per year to visit family. He was a three-sport star at Collinsville (Ill.) High.

And the University of Illinois just fired its athletic director.

So George was laughing, maybe because he knows he's a popular man with some influential folks in east central Illinois, just as he was a wanted man when CU smartly plucked him from a top-shelf gig with the Texas Rangers in 2013.

And he knew where I was going with the home query: If Illinois approaches George about its AD job, what would be his level of interest?

"Look, my focus is on what we're doing here. It's way too early for me to be making any comments about that," he said. "I'm happy doing what we're doing and we're doing some really good things here. You've seen it. I'm focused on what we're doing here, not on what's going on in Champaign, Illinois."

Nice to read but doesn't tell us what he's thinking. Is he being diplomatic and not really interested in Illinois? Is he being diplomatic and wanting to praise CU before he leaves? Why wasn't he hired last time? I'd assume some of the same ECI people wanted him then as well? Were they overruled by Wise and Kennedy then? Was he not approached then? It will all be interesting. Hope we get him.

How many times have we heard a coach or similar official say they aren't interested in a job somewhere and take that same job a week later? George didn't even bother to do that ("It's way too early for me to be making any comments about that"), so I would assume that he has at least some interest in the UI job. I take that as a mildly positive sign, but who really knows?
