For the sake of full disclosure then, I lived in the Raleigh area for a couple of years and took some classes at NC State trying to get ready for a master's program. I moved back to Illinois and haven't followed them as close as I used to a few years ago. NC State fans know they're the third best basketball school in the state, but they want to get back to prominence where they're competing in the ACC and making runs in the tournament yearly. Gottfried failed at that the last couple of years but he's a good coach, IMO. NCState is a hard place to coach because of unrealistic expectations from Debbie Yow and their fan base.

I can't really disagree with that too much. However that being said NCSU has a major selling point that most of you guys on this board are missing.

While NCSU is the red-headed stepchild of the Triangle (pun very much intended), Roy Williams is 67 and Coach Ratface (Imean Coach K) is in his 70s. The new coach there will have a chance from that administration to build up the program to capitalize for the transitions of UNC and Duke.

That is a huge selling point, I would almost equate that to the amount Illinois is rumored to pay their next coach.

Honestly, even though Indiana just fired Crean, I would rate all 3 jobs as very enticing to up and comers or even established coaches

Tony Bennett...done deal.

I'd take it but at 4.5 million is he worth that? That would put him in the top 8 coaches in the country is he at that level? You can't pay him more then Lovie can you? How about 6 years at 3.5 per year maybe to 4 million tops.

Yes. And yes. And yes. And no.

Did anyone see that Cuonzo Martin is wanting to get Walker as an assistant?

I saw that. They are going to have to try to make him one of the highest paid assistants to keep him. Martin is trying to add Illini's top rated class to Porter.

He almost has to target Walker. If he pulls Walker, its fairly likely that Tilmon follows.

Whether Walker will bite is another question.

The done deal is off. Tony saw this post. Can't deal with such a ridiculous fanbase.

These Mizzou developments remind me of the Marlins' "roster building" prior to winning the WS.

Is it common for a player to be this tied to an assistant coach?

Maybe he can, maybe he can't, but it's immaterial as to whether Illinois or Missouri would want him. Let's put it this way, Walker isn't paid to put plays on a chalkboard

Absolutely worth it. I don't think Lovie would be too worried about that - at this point in his life personally and professionally he's been ultra-successful and is ultra-rich. I just don't see his ego getting bruised that easily.

Bennett at Illinois would be like Bo Ryan at Wisconsin in terms of never having to worry about being outcoached. BUT, Bennett is also young, charismatic, a solid recruiter (both in terms of finding good fits and reeling in 4-star+ prospects), a former NBA player, etc. No brainer.

1. Why do we care, and why does it matter?
2. You pay what it takes. Otherwise you move down your list. Business 101. Capitalism 101.

I hear you. What's funny is I heard these Martin to Mizzou rumors while at the bulls game last night. While there I ran into TUGS Bowen and he mentioned what was going on. Martin trying to build a top 5 class by stealing committed recruits.

I've been listening to all the NCST chatter concerning Miller, Keatts, etc. However Debbie Yow is the AD at NCST and this is what that means.

I live in a suburb of St Louis and when she was at SLU, she and head basketball coach Rich Grawer barely spoke. It was well known.

She went to Maryland and to her credit cleaned up the financial mess but it was well known that she and Gary Williams (a class act human being) had a "very strained relationship".

She is now back in her home state with a reputation as having maybe unrealistic expectations for her coaches. How bad does Miller want to put up with this or even Keatts.

Nothing in life happens in isolation. If you are a jerk as an AD, every head coach in every sport in America knows it almost immediately. They and their agents talk. You really think those coaches go to the Final4 to only watch basketball.

What is the perception of our very young AD by coaches/agents. Based on how he handles himself in front of a mic I admit I'm very optimistic.

You can get to the point that the Final4 weekend doesn't matter. On shoot around Friday morning in 2005, a friend of ours confronted Lute Olson at Lambert as he was getting ready to fly back to Tuscon. "Aren't you staying for the Final 4." His reply, "I had to be in town for a rules meeting but actually I enjoy the game more sitting on my couch in front of the TV'.
