The Illinois Coaching Search

In comparison to Monty Williams, whom everyone here seemingly would love to have, I don't see much of a difference based on their NBA coaching records. Mitchell had .433 winning percentage while Williams had a .439 percentage in only 33 fewer games coached. I'm not advocating for Mitchell, but I don't see how'd be any worse than Monty.

Two of the guys that everybody is fawning over don't even seem interested in other coaching positions as of now.

Somewhat vague comments like those are the standard fare from Marshall for the past 5 years or so. All personal feelings aside, he knows it's a business and that you always pick up the phone to listen, never saying never. Still, it will take an absolutely perfect scenario to pull him away from Wichita. He's a huge believer in "don't mess with happy", and he has almost anything that you could ask for right now. In many ways, his entire family is royalty in this town and his current contract allows him any standard of living that you could ask for in this area. On the court, he just lost an NBA backcourt and followed that up with another 30 win season without having a single senior in the rotation. Find me a single coach in the country that would want to walk away from a returning team like that next year.

All of that said, and with an admittedly huge amount of personal bias, Gregg Marshall is still my 1A, 1B, and 1C choice for the next Illinois head basketball coach. As much as I would love this, I just can't see it happening for some of the reasons I touched on above though. But with the current state of the Missouri Valley Conference, and how it may be holding down the ceiling of the WSU program, I can legitimately see him looking to leave this year. There are a ton of rumors about Wichita State possibly moving to the American, but if this is not setup to happen in the next 2-3 years tops, there is a widespread belief that Marshall will be leaving, even among Shocker fans.

How many of us have read every page of this thread? Any idea on how many hours we've spent so far? It's been fun!

So, when does Josh Whitman hold a presser to announce Tom Crean is not a candidate for the Illinois job?

You got it backwards. Some media guy connected to Crean will throw out that he turned down a 6 year $25m offer from Illinois to instead take the assistant coaching position at the Timberwolves. [emoji106]

You're probably right :thumb:

Would be pretty triggered if Walker and Tilmon end up at Mizzou, have hated that school ever since that stretch around the Rose Bowl year where we kept playing them the first game of the season.

I think that's more likely than us keeping both of them.

So my top pick is JW's number one choice. We'll likely know in a couple of weeks. He's not going to announce before March 30. Josh is not going to interfere with our run to the NIT championship, or possibly April 3, so not to interfere with someone else's run to the NCAA championship..

I don't think Josh will let an NIT run impact the coaching search. Just my opinion...

I don't think we would wait til we're done playing to make an announcement. I have vague recollections of other teams doing this.

I agree with this. I think it's likely that if JW gets his guy, the deal will be signed and announced regardless of our status in the NIT. If that were to happen, I think you let the current staff finish off the tournament rather than injecting the new coach. That would just be strange.

I agree you get this done once you get your coach as quick as possible because signed recruits and one in particular that hasn't signed need clarity on what the future holds.

Jankovich is living off Larry Brown's recruits, he was a nothing at Illinois State

The recruiting is a legitimate question, but he had more to do with developing that program than people are giving him credit for. He was doing a lot of the work there from Day 1. They hired him and paid him to be a psuedo-Head Coach.

But he made an instant impact at ISU too, and then just kinda tread water from there. Would the same thing happen at SMU and/or Illinois?

I can see the arguments both ways, but you don't just dismiss a very good fit who is coaching the #12 team in the country (with only seven scholarship players, as long as we're talking about Larry Brown's roster craftsmanship) out of hand.

Have we considered Harry Statham?

Pros: UI grad, winningest college basketball coach of all time, 50 years of coaching experience, high character

Cons: only experience is NAIA - not sure he wants to make the transition to D1, also he's 79 years old.

All in all, could be the off the radar pick that Whitman is keeping completely hushed. Looking forward to seeing whether it's him

And then bring back Homer Drew as an assistant and add Lon Kruger and Geno Auriemma too as assistants. With that much experience we should be able to develop a game plan that may actually win some games. The all geezer coaching staff (I can say that 'cause I am a geezer, too)

If we end up with Drew, we can put to bed the notion of ever getting a top notch coach to come here. With this amount of $$ available, a good AD, new arena, good facilities and a solid base of recruits......and we still can't lure one away....it'll never happen.

You may personally hate the guy for some reason, but if we end up with Drew, it will prove that we CAN and DID get a top notch coach to come here. Drew makes 2.7 mil per year (with probably a very substantial buyout), at another Power 5 school, and will have left said school after only 1 year. That would be a HUGE investment in a pretty much universally acknowledged future coaching star.

I believe that the first move by Whitman is to text him "I've been thinking about you... a lot"
