I believe he has his coach (MILLER Time) and is waiting on that first round game...if Dayton wins...we buy more time, if they lose announcement as I have predicted before Weds 10:00 am. This would also make sense in that Bollant is now gone as well....hmmm

This whole "he wouldn't start a women's search without finishing the men's search" thing is invented out of thin air.

Nothing of the sort has happened, or even showed initial indications of happening. We lived through that last time, we'll know it when we see it.

Personally, much of this search so far has reminded me of last time.

I want what's best for the program. Being strung along by unrealistic fantasies makes for an embarrassing public mess of a process that meaningfully hamstrings the next coach.

Does it really meaningfully hamstring the next coach? I don't think Groce's lack of success had anything to do with Shaka and Stevens shooting us down. Yeah, that media took a couple shots at Illinois, but they've done the same for every school that has been shot down. If it hurt anyone's reputation is was Thomas, not Groce.

The narrative around the "public embarrassment" of the MT searches was total nonsense from day 1.

I realize I'm kind of arguing against myself here. :lalala:

If we are still talking about it five years later, it is not total nonsense.

Thing about narratives, they don't need to be 100% true.

The thing is though Tony Bennett isn't an unrealistic fantasy. He's a Midwest guy that makes $2.1 million a year. Virginia is a great school, but it arguably is the 9th or 10th best job in the ACC. Taking my Illini orange glasses off, if I was him I would be interested

If this kind of logic were generally operative, established winning major conference coaches would leave their jobs all the time.

Instead, it virtually never happens.

One reason why: one way or another, Tony Bennett will be making what he's worth next year.

Bennett = Mover/Blocker offense. Some of our players and recruits may decide that's not for them. Its not for everybody.

The point is, you're not doing your job if you don't aim high. People like Tony Bennett and Gregg Marshall should be contacted. But they're going to play footsie with you. They're happy to con you into a fake whirlwind romance while they play hardball with their employers.

But a desperate fanbase with an inferiority complex is not going to cope with that well, and is going to take it out on the right coach that gets hired at the end of the process.

So when the rumor is zOMG, we're gonna back up the Brinks truck for Tony Bennett, understand that that in no way increases the basically zero odds of Tony Bennett being Illinois' basketball coach.

Josh Whitman got Lovie because he has connections unique to football and he was creative and resourceful. Not because he's some sort of superhero who can tilt the iron laws of the coaching market off their axis.

Hey now, I'm not sure we have enough data to reject that null hypothesis yet. ;)

Again, I don't think this is true. Very few people took us getting shot down by Shaka and Stevens out on Groce. I went back to look at the hiring thread and it's incredibly positive, especially after his first press conference.

And if the hire ends up being for example Counzo Martin, I think the reaction would be a lot more positive to him AFTER getting shot down by a Bennett and a Miller.

Why are those jobs better than ours, do you think (if you do think that)? We have as much money at our disposal as them, to my knowledge. Our fan base is as rabid and at LEAST as big as all of them. "basketball environment."

All those programs are not better than ours when all things are looked at objectively. What exists is that they are PERCEIVED as being better. And right now they should be. Two reasons for that. Outside observers haven't been given any recent good reasons to perceive the Illini in a better light. The Illini haven't given them any. And secondly, the lowered expectations of the fan base has not created enough internal energy and pressure to right the ship prior to this. BOTH of these conditions need to change NOW with this new hire. Absent this, it will remain Mediocre City for the Sleeping Giant of the Land of Lincoln.

But a desperate fanbase...is going to take it out on the right coach that gets hired at the end of the process.

What, exactly, does this mean? What does "take it out" mean, and how is it going to affect whether or not this right coach wins games?

On the recruits front I could understand. But as far as returning players on our current roster I can't think of one who is not suited for a motion offense.

Nah, make it be Champaign-based. Get REO Speedwagon. I saw them four years ago and they rocked the house.

Last saw them live 45 years ago + or -, and they rocked the house (Red Lion). Couldn't see from one end of the house to the other due to a severe haze. Maybe Lady whatshername could show up to help them with Sophisitcated Lady.

I don't find general, sweeping statements particularly pursuasive. The money in basketball has changed - leaving for $500,000 extra doesn't make a lot of sense, potentially doubling your salary does. Bennett has built a really nice program at Virginia, but ultimately he has NC, Duke and now Syracuse and Louisville that will always have a financial/reputation advantage over him. The BIG is wide open right now unless you think Painter/Purdue are going to become a dynasty. The guy also has deep roots in the Midwest. If I was betting, I would say he stays at UVA and gets a raise, but it's certainly not outlandish to think he comes here if offered $4-5 million

I want to believe!

Jay Wright makes just under 2.5MIL at a private school. I'm not sure how much higher they could go. Could he be had for 4.5MIL?? Worth that much? Not my money, but I'd be all for it.

We've completely lost any semblance of sanity. And so early.

Agreed, if by "not outlandish" you mean "there's a very small chance."

Virginia and other schools also know how to fill a truck with money. A couple million is a rounding error to Paul Tudor Jones (he funded UVA's arena) (and the Koch Brothers in the case of Marshall).

We should assume that the coaches at the top of our list will not be motivated primarily by money and will get a counter-offer from their employer. There needs to be a really good reason beyond money. Whitman is good, but he's not an alchemist.

Totally agree

Who has good reason beyond money?

Keatts- Giant step up

Martin- Coming Home

Marshall- Sick of mid-major treatment

Musselman- Next step on ladder

Capel- Best chance to prove he can handle Duke when time comes
