No coach would be announced until their team is finished in the NCAAT.

I did not see the presser. Did he announce a search firm?

I hope not, but a couple of posters have alluded to it.

No search firm.

Keatts may be a front runner by the sounds of it. His track record seems good but can he succeed in the big ten? It's one thing to succeed at a mid major. I trust Whitman in whatever direction he goes in I just know the big ten is a different kind of animal when its a good year.

Very happy about NO SEARCH FIRM.

Good sign, plus total waste of money.

Watching the press conference on Big 10 network. Whitman is very impressive. Illinois is lucky to have him.

I'm down for Keatts, like the high risk - high reward new coach scenarios more than the stable guys.

If we're looking to really compete and pay well, I make him one of the top paid assistants in the country. I think his ability to recruit Chicago along with a top notch coach could make us a perennial contender. Not sure if money and his alma mater are enough to get him away from Lawrence, but I sure as hell try. We need someone big to help us win the battles for the Jabari Parker, Jahlil Okafor types.

I definitely support this idea. It's a long shot of course, but Howard isn't gaining much traction at Kansas with his head coaching goals. He obviously loves Illinois and may be enticed by a nice pay raise and being back at his alma mater where he could possibly gain much needed fan support as a future candidate for head coach here (down the road of course). If Whitman is actually working with 5 million dollars as some have stated then landing Keatts would surely leave plenty of that sum left over for a hire like this. A combination of Keats and Howard would absolutely get me excited about the future of the program.

Bennett and Miller would be homeruns, to me. Keatts would have me excited, but not as much as the aforementioned.

If Monty was offered big money to come here, you'd think that paying Bennett that money and having him come here wouldn't be that far of a stretch.

Sorry but I wont call anyone a home run hire until they win. We have gone through too many coaches and too many searches and "great hires" with nothing to show for it. Whomever it is, lets see them win and actually win big. THEN, we can call it a home run hire.

As for the names, It is Marshall for me.

He's a lawyer, so I do believe that they haven't started reaching out, but I don't for a second believe they haven't put feelers out through intermediaries/surrogates. So, it's not technically a lie. That's my guess.

Like I told my 2 sons I'd be down for driving to Wichita to help G Marshall load the moving van to come to UI.

Man, this guy. Just all class. What a fantastic AD.

Groce is talking about. He's such a class act. I really am sad it didn't work for him here, but it was time for a change. It is such an entirely different feel than when Weber was fired.

Including Tyndall eliminates all credibility. No way we hire a coach with his background.

Agree. He was a slug at Tennessee. Has all kinds of baggage relating to rules violations. Can't imagine that Whitman would ever seriously consider a guy like that after the Beckmann fiasco. Archie Miller would be a great pick if they cannot get Williams.

Anybody else believe him when he says they haven't started reaching out to candidates until today?

He can say that because he will have reached out through surrogates. So no direct contact with candidates.

No search firm.

A search firm was mentioned by one of the Chicago Newspapers. Apparently that wasn't the case.
I think Whitman wants to get it done quickly. but if we are to believe him, he isn't far a long with the process. In a way, that figures, because most of the top candidates will be coaching their teams in the NCAA tournament.

Now, let the Coaches start denying interest in the job and parleying that into a raise at their current school even though we had no interest in them. Or as my Grandpa would say, "Let the Dog and Pony Show Begin". I do think Whitman will get the his first choice, whom ever that may be.
