No. Once you cross that line, there's no turning back.
Yeah, but until you cross, there's no winning.

Honestly, I think he goes too far at KU. How he gets out of some of the things that we have heard about unscathed amazes me.
Dirty not so secret: Illinois has crossed that line and come back several times in the past couple of decades. If you think that the 80's happened solely b/c of an established Lou Henson and a Jimmy Collins then you're kidding yourself. If you think Bill Self had to go to KU to become Bill $elf then you're kidding yourself.
Why would we want Enfield?

I'm going to guess that she wants to stay in California.
I liked the Scott Drew idea too but I hear he might be shady? Not to sure what to believe. Also hear he's not liked. Any thoughts?
So hypothetically, what would a knife look like in the recruiting world compared to a gun?
So read the thread, looks like Buzz Williams, Scott Drew, and Archie Miller would be the home run hires. They would be the ceiling, to the thread, and Martin and Keats are the floor.

I am not the one placing Whitman on a high pedestal, but alot of his lore, not just board talk, was his ability to get a good nfl coach to come and take over a real down football program.
He misses there, and who knows what happens, do we just keep the coach we had?

When my son inevitably is a 5-star PG recruit, and some boosters are offering $150k for him to go to Indiana, I'm going to teach him how to take that offer to Illinois, ask them for more, then go to the highest bidder out of schools that he would seriously be excited about (and had coaches that I trusted to take good care of my kid).
That's exactly the same process I followed the last time I was on the job market. Learning how to negotiate and leverage an offer is a valuable life skill.
Now, if I got wind that someone wanted to take him to a strip club on his campus visit...well, that's a different story.
Its only relevant to the bball search because he tried the exact same thing. It's not a casual fan's standard, it's his.
ok, how about pie in the sky coaching hires, would there be a better candidate than Brad Stevens at this point, would he be the best hire possible? Just for fun, obviously.
Gotta love the realists who swoop in to save us all from ourselves!!!!

1. Self
2. Calipari
3. Billy Donovan
4. Stevens
Cuonzo Martin will take this job if offered, and he is a higher caliber coach than Groce.
So, yes.
:thumb:
I don't present this as evidence he is the guy for the job, or even that it is a valid way to judge a coach. It's just numbers.
Martin's record when expunging his first season at each school (his worst at each stop):
Missouri State: 50-21 (23-13)
Tennessee: 44-26 (22-14)
California: 44-23 (22-14)
Total: 138-70 (67-41)
That's not bad. It's not Bill Self, but it's Tom Crean. Maybe we need a Tom Crean before we can get another Bill Self. He hasn't had a real chance to build his program his way over an extended period of time. He's only had short bursts, and after a year of adjustment he's performed pretty well at all three stops. Certainly much better than John Groce has ever performed.
This doesn't excuse obvious coaching deficiencies others have noticed. I am not familiar enough with him to offer an opinion on that. So, no, I'm not making a case for Cuonzo as the next coach. I am, however, making a case that if UI indeed is forced to settle on him, it's not nearly as bad (at face value) as some are suggesting. Given his reputation as a recruiter, with ties to both the STL and Indy areas, as well as mining Chicago for Charlie Moore, and his supposed high regard and desire for the job, he could be a very good consolation prize. I am okay with a guy who might not get UI to the top level, but merely gets the program back to a respectable level. It may be our most realistic hope at this point. The program has lost its luster. Think about what Crean has done at IU and ask yourself if you would be okay with that given how the last 10 years have gone.
All this said, go get Marshall or Miller or Bennett or Buzz. If Cuonzo is seen as a consolation, well, that's not too bad.
There is little doubt that Martin would kill it on the recruiting front at Illinois.
