Put me in the camp that thinks Self literally only leaves for KU, which was his dream job. Kruger left for the NBA, a destination that often steals from Blue Bloods, too (not to mention Kruger has been somewhat of a traveler!). This idea that we are a stepping stone, while understandable, is kind of odd. IMO, we're no more of a stepping stone than MSU, Michigan, Ohio State or Georgetown ... there was just a very specific circumstance that led to that perception.

This is actually a good point. In the last 40+ years the only head basketball coaches and football coaches to leave Illinois for another college job was Mackovich to Texas and Self to Kansas. That doesn't exactly scream stepping stone programs.

FWIW, here is who I would go after if I was Whitman:

1. Archie Miller - Make him say no to $4m/year
2. Gregg Marshall - Gloves are off now, make him say no to $4.5m/year
3. Cuonzo Martin - Not my favorite hire, but still a good one. Probably getable around $2.5m/year
4. Kevin Keatts - Ok, the more established guys have passed. Hire the hot mid-major guy with good credentials.

If Miller is your first choice, as he is mine, why would you offer him less than Marshall?

Also Bartow to UCLA to replace John Wooden. Throw in Lon to the Hawks for good measure and you have our major sport coaches leaving only for the NBA, Kansas basketball, UCLA basketball and Texas football.

NOT a stepping stone!

LOL, I think it's hilarious when casual fans "value" frugality in our coaching searches ... if Illinois were paying someone $10 million a year and that guy would win basketball games here and some boosters were paying for it, then I'm all for it! Not my money!

I don’t know who the next coach is, but the stuff that is coming out is very interesting, just like the time the G-Police raided Krakou Headquarters and discovered the findings of a ‘new super weapon’.

If you played G-Police like I did back in the 90’s, you’ll know what I mean. Look up the game sometime. Came out on PC and Playstation.

I have a hard time believing anything with this hire will get leaked. Whitman has been sealed tight for most everything he has done as A.D. The only way something would be leaked is if the coach he hired spilled the beans.

Seems unlikely to me you could get an agreement to leak in the week leading up to the tournament. I'm sure there is a lot of activity going on, but I'm expecting us to have to be patient.

I’ve said it before on here, and I’ll say it again. I hope Cuonzo Martin doesn’t come here. Just don’t see the appeal with the guy. Whitman and Illinois can do much better.

Picking coaches is a world class crapshoot.

John Wooden went to UCLA and in his first 14 years averaged over 9 losses per year. He went to a much smaller "dance" 4 times and never got out of the regional. Solid but its not getting you into the hall of fame.
...
I think that it is amazing that Wooden was given 14 years to figure it out. No way any coach today is given that kind of time.
