This is the exact prognostication presented before today and everyone was "meh" at best.

I mentioned the Porter concept in passing a month ago, but that hasn't been part of the bargain.

Cuonzo is a more valuable asset with the Porters. That is an uncontroversial statement.

"A good recruiter" and "The #1 recruit next year as a guaranteed part of the package" are not the same thing.

I mean shiiiiiii....look at how much the #1 recruit in the nation did for LSU last season when he was paired with a mehhh roster. They just absolutely LIT the world on fire in the NCAAs...oh wait...

Boy, we have a lot of posters who talk a big game about not needing a short term recruiting burst at the cost of potential long-term success when it's in the abstract and then lose their minds when presented with the reality.

This is the exact prognostication presented before today and everyone was "meh" at best.

It's ridiculous. Almost everyone had Martin at the low-end of their lists and would have been pissed if he was Whitman's first offer. Also, it's been pretty widely know that he wanted to go to either Missouri or Illinois, so it's not really like this was unexpected, but now that's it has its the end of the world.

Why does everyone make it seem like cuonzo martin is this total idiot when it comes to in game strategy but Bennett is an all out guru? Yes Martin has 5 stars at Cal and they made it to the tourney but they were still freshmen and his two other best players (whom were guards) didnt play. Bennett had klat thomspon and went 17-16. Certain schools its just difficult to garner a vast amount of talent. All-in-all their PAC12 results are somewhat similar. I just think Cuanzo wouldve killed two birds with one stone and solved the chicago and stl enigma. Plus it's not like he couldn't get an Xs and Os assistant.

You know who is a more valuable asset with the Porters than Cuonzo? lorenzo romar

How would you have played it with Cuonzo + Porter if known?

Assuming guys like Keatts and Musselman are genuine targets, I still pass.

I'd want to take a look at the real list before I answer that question though. If Whitman must have a major conference coach to appease the donors and we're talking about Greg McDermott or Bobby freaking Hurley, it's a bad scene.

But again, I think the idea that the Porters could have been packaged to Champaign is, at this point, speculation at best.

The Martin hire to Missouri would've concerned me, I don't know, last summer. Now it's almost laughable to watch another program make (imo) a shortsighted, desperate hire.

Whitman could've taken the easy route and inked Cuonzo three days ago. This sends a strong message to the college basketball community about our commitment to making the right investment.

I mean you can start by collectively looking at the entire body of each coach's work in conference play (with Bennett being in the ACC over the better part of the past decade and Zo in the SEC/Pac 12) and then look at NCAA tournament success... a fairly clear narrative emerges that supports the theory you're questioning above.

I said this earlier, but again, if you want to hire a guy proven to be a good coach - why does everyone always want him to lose asap in the tournament?

ESPN HEADLINE

Breaking News: Illinois hires UNC-Wilm head coach Keatts, who lead his team to a Sweet Sixteen appearance as a 12 seed, to the same position. Sources say deal is for 5 years $3.2 million dollars

Sounds a lot better to me than the alternative...

I said why, I'M selfish. Self serving. I want a successful basketball program again. I just can't wait. Seriously, the last two hires we had every good coach turn us down. I've developed a complex.

Just stop making sense. Stop. Stop it now.

I never saw Reggie lose a game on T.V. Amazing prime time record. But seriously he did have a better resume. And we are not getting Ken Anderson aka The White Shadow, sadly he passed away last year.

White Shadow was a great show. Ball fans could enjoy it on that level, but the stories were so good you didn't have to be a sports fan to enjoy it. Sadly, Ken is gone. But Coolidge, Thorpe, and Go-Go-Gomez might be available? As for Theus, he had a nice 41-23 record with what he had at New Mexico State. Let's see. New Mexico State. Why does that seem to ring a bell?

More to my argument against Cuonzo is that assist coach is critical in helping improving players and in-game strategies; it's extremely short-sighted to use that position as a lure for a likely OND.

I am not saying the Potter Sr is for sure unqualified. But you can find so many more proven assist coaches than him. This hire plus the Cuonzo hire is very, very, short-sighted. I am glad that Illinois avoided this trap.

it still took him 4 years to get those results. I think he probably even got better as a coach in numerous facets. Dont' be surprised if Martin achieves that at Mizzou.

I didn't think of this before.

What if Romar found out he was being fired first, told Porter, and Porter went to Cuonzo to try and put this whole Mizzou thing together? And Cuonzo decided that if he could have the Porters, he wasn't going to wait around on the Illinois job.

That makes the pieces fit together better than any of my previous assumptions.

Porter stabbing Romar in the back just doesn't fit.

Wow! I seriously didn't think about that, history repeating itself. Its Karma.
