Indiana has as many top 10 classes as Illinois does the last ten years. That should put into perspective how much of a draw their blue blood status is.

Meanwhile Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Kansas and UCLA put out insane classes year after year because they're Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Kansas and UCLA.

I prefer Tony Bennett to Keatts. Bennett has proven successes in P5. We can at least have a team that consistently defend well and fight hard with Bennet. Keatts has a chance (though small) to be Groce No.2.

I think its the characterization of Self as not an X's and O's coach that had me scratching my head. He's not Dick Bennett, but he's not Calipari either.

He is an outstanding x and O guy. Calipari too but agree to disagree.

My point was Self at that time was known as a folksy car salesman who could sell sand in desert. Well he still is, but I digress. I was trying to illustrate that in coaching changes you usually go opposite of where you just were.

Bill Self is a phenomenal coach.

They have more money, more resources, better facilites, a bigger fanbase, more attention nationally, and most importantly, more preferential access to a larger talent pool.

Indiana is not a blue blood anymore, if they ever were, but that's an outstanding job.

Not sure I agree with the bolded. With JW at the helm I think that we can match them for money and resources and with the new SFC I think we outdo them for facilities. The size of the fanbase is arguable but I haven't seen any evidence that theirs is bigger.

Right, but the same could be said for how Kentucky was before Cal got there. At the moment I agree with you. But when evaluating a job/program and a school overall, a lot more history and tradition goes into it than just what the current status over the last 5 or 10 years has been.

And Indiana produces top tier national recruits where as North Carolina, Kentucky, and Kansas don't. So it's not a fair comparison really.

UK had titles with Pitino and Tubby, not too long prior to Cal. KU will likely stay blueblood post Cal.

Agreed, everything moves very quick in the coaching market, but I don't think that Keatts winning a few games in the tournament opens up that many jobs to him at schools that are both unambiguously better than Illinois and which aren't looking at him right now.

Indiana has always been a better job than Illinois, yet their last 3 coaches were Mike Davis, Sampson, and Crean. You can make an argument that IU should have done better than all three. UCLA ended up with Alford, not their top choices either. He has done well, but at the time, Alford was hardly a high choice for UCLA. The risk of not getting your top choices is always there, even for schools like Indiana.

I think Keatts will be very successful at the next level. Personable, good game coach, great at building relationships. Many of the coaches I have met consider him one of their own, I think he will also be a very successful recruiter at the next level.

That aside, and I think someone else already posted it, but IU has a sense of entitlement and superiority that is very blue-bloodish. A co-worker went to see them get knocked out of the NIT by Tech :D and sat next to some IU fans. They were apoplectic that IU had even accepted the NIT bid, and then out of their heads that Tech had the audacity to show up to play against the mighty Hoosiers.

Basically, IU fans are like Yankees fans.

I hate IU so much, but this discussion about which job is better between UI and IU is laughable.

Look I hate IU but it is a better job than Illinois. Anyone who thinks that Illinois is better has some seriously orange colored glasses. IU may not be a blue blood but they have a very strong national brand. Whether we like it or not they have jumped to the top of the coaching vacancies.

It's a borderline blue blood--but seems like they've developed some expectations that will make it a hard place to succeed. Are coaches interested in getting into no win situations like IU? I think he's a crappy coach--but he did with the B1G just last year.

Can't wait to listen to 670 tonight and hear about how the delusional Illinois fans think the Illinois job is better than the Indiana job.
