It’s definitely a cya situation.
Exactly.

Also, a consultant is hired by management and for management to tell management exactly what management already wants to hear. Then management can say, "The consultant told us to do it."

The last thing that management would hire a consultant to do would be to provide objective, independent, expert advice.

Agree that I would rather have Bielma than Heupel, although I don't think Heupel is a bad guy or a terrible hire.

(It seems like this is the thread that has been open for this type of news, sorry if it’s in the wrong place). It will be interesting in a few years to see who is happier with their choice, Tennessee or UCF?

Not bad to be graded the same as Harsin and Auburn and right behind Texas with Sark and the Malzahn UCF hiring. I find the Tennessee/UCF thing fascinating. They were a great G5 program, that was slipping slightly the last couple years, Tennessee gives them a free fresh start and they bring in the biggest coaching star of this year's carousel. Seems like a nice upgrade. Tennessee is something else. Heupel filled out his coordinators with Beckman guys, Golesh and Banks. I may be in the minority but I think Banks is a pretty good DC, but not sure how he'll do in the SEC. Golesh just seems like a guy, and I assume Heupel will be calling the plays. Just weird to see 2 big parts of one of the worst Illinois staffs (just 6 years ago) now coordinators at a big SEC program.

What do you think about Wilks as Mizzou def coord? Seems like good hire but flamed out as HC for AZ and browns were a huge mess with kitchens as HC. Guessing couldn’t find an nfl spot last year and this year. App st connection to Eli. Seems like a good hire?
But did work with Lovie in Chicago and longtime nfl guy soo....?

I would assume that Bielema (and his staff) have started conversations with state high school coaches and the feedback that they got is that McNeal was well liked amongst them. That the issue wasn't him, but Lovie.
Yep

Can somebody with more knowledge explain why we would want to bring back somebody involved with Lovie Smith recruiting?
Same reason Pat Embleton was retained and given a promotion under Bret......these guys are good at their jobs they just have to have a boss who is equally as good and invested as they are. Also I would assume Nate is coming back in a similar role as he had before. High school relations or something along those lines.

Nate? Ah, McNeal, not our ex-QB.

Gonna be very interesting to see how this program and the performance on the field by the team and individual differs due to BB and his staff. I can't wait.

My daughter graduates in May - this change is 3 yrs too late in my mind!

I like Nate , probably will become a really good coach in due time , but yea , the crazy love some people on here have for just about any former Illini is only surpassed by scUM fans and their love of MEECHIGAN men .

Here we go. Another 1000 replies on why Nathan Scheelhaase should be our coach. Why?
The post needed some more traffic. j/k. Sorry, when I saw Nate, it was the first thing that I thought of. Started questioning why he would take a demotion, and then thought to look at coach McNeal's first name. Realized my error.
