If it is Leonhard would Illinois wait until after the bowl game to announce it? He is still a part of that staff until then. If that is the case the earliest we would hear about Jim Leonhard would be 12/28.
Dominoes anyone?

Leonhard was one of the top defensive coordinators before RW got a "better resume" and Leonhard is still one of the top defensive coordinators in the nation. Walters is the hot name to us and nationally more so this season, Leonhard has been a hot name nationally for years.

Leonard is very smart! No coaching experience and joined Wisconsin as DB coach in 2016. Less than year later he gets promoted to DC and is a Broyles finalist after his first season. This will be a First Class hire for Illinois or wherever he lands.

Oooof didn't realize JL would mean having to wait all the way until then. No news then should be good news that we are heading in that direction, but man that's a lot of time for stuff to change. I'm also nervous at the prospect of another DC search after next season. But it sure would be exciting to add a guy like him to the staff for 2023!

Leonhard has also had a top 10 defense nationally 4 of 5 years. So he stepped in with no experience and was instantly one of the best in the nation. Guy has to have something going on between the ears.

The other thing to think about is that if we can't announce a JL DC hire until December 28th or 29th, that is 7-8 days after the early signing period starts.

Leonhard has all the connections to the Wisky players and recruits

Our defense was awesome this year and it is obvious Walters and his staff could develop players. JL has years of success. The fact we are having this debate shows the progress we made

Was Leonhard in the running for the PU job or was Walters the top pick?
I don’t even think Walters was PUs first choice.

If Leonhard knows he is taking the position, he has already said he isn't coming back to Wisconsin, he could be telling his recruits that he is taking the Illinois job and to wait to sign. Don't know how that would work for some of the recruits but I know that any that REALLY like him would probably wait.

I'm assuming if JL is the hire there's be a way to "communicate" that to key recruits?

Wisconsin has nailed the DC position over the years....Illinois can do the same ;)

Full-time DC at Wisconsin after BB got promoted to HC

Mike Hankwitz
Dave Doeren
Chris Ash
Dave Aranda
Justin Wilcox
Jim Leonhard

That is one of the most impressive lists I have seen in awhile!

I wish I could like this post 1000 times.

I think he means Walters will always get the credit for defensive success at Purdue, as he was brought in to be a defensive guru. Kane would be viewed positively, but teams may not hire him if they think he is a product of Walters.
Except Walters came here under a defensive guru and none of that happened.

My rule of thumb is an offensively inclined head coach is more likely to siphon away kudos from the offensive coordinator than a defensive-minded coach from the DC.

JL has made it known he is not going to be in Madison next year. I don’t understand why he can’t have his next job announced prior to him leaving. I understand not making it official but if he was coming here I would think that would be leaked

Doesn't seem terribly scientific, but I'll buy it.

yea, Im not sure how it all works right now

but iirc, wasnt there a time not that long ago, that a guy would take a new coaching job, but stick around and coach the current team until the bowl game was over ? of course back then NLI signing day was the first Wednesday in February

Ive figured it out! The science lab had a breakthrough and can now create GMCs. Genetically Modified Coaches. The new DC will be a hybrid named Leonard Kane. BB is way ahead of the curve!

Can we get at least a dash of Fergie in there?

the longer this goes with no news, the only real take away is:

a. its not Kane , or that would have been announced by now
b. its likely Leonhard, and its not been announced yet, as he is still the interim HC for the bowl game

I'm kind of curious if JL has been asked about this up in Madison in the last 2 days and what his response has been
