I feel like in 10 years we're gonna be wishing we had taken the risk on Scheelhaase. Dude has a very bright future.

Does anyone know whether Monken would actually run the triple option (flexbone) offense if he got hired here? Did he run that at Georgia Southern? It's my understanding that all the service academies run the triple option due to their particular circumstances (small O-line) and I'd think he'd modify his offense when those circumstances change, right?

We’ll then, it’s a done deal since he undoubtedly “understands” a Vandy Athletics...
Cant imagine he’d want to go there if he didn’t play there. But thats a good hire for them. Leaves monken and liepold available still, if thats our leading candidates.

All of the triple option fans out there who are ready to put IW under center and watch him fly. Have you forgotten he is 180 LBS and will get hit nearly every play by Big10 defenses? Even when he doesn't have the ball a good triple option qb gets hit because of good ball fakes. He is better suited as a dual threat spread qb where the lanes are bigger with less traffic, if he isn't playing slot I mean. Teaching a spread qb to play in a triple option who has never done it is like making an athletic LB a TB. You can do it, but it ain't pretty. These triple option offenses recruit Wing T qb's who have been under center getting hit for 4 years of high school and are disciplined with their mesh points. No shot.

What a weird stance....
Sure, maybe to you. I dont think my stance is as rare as you seem to think. Nothing about him excites me. He failed to turn around Arkansas, left with lots of bad press and red flags around him, and has been jumping from NFL job to NFL job the last few years. In his 1st year, they were 0-8 in the SEC. In his 5th year he was 1-7. Maybe that 1-7 SEC record and 4-8 overall record in his last year excites you or gives you confidence in his ability to succeed in the B1G again. It does not excite me. It reminds me exactly of the coach we literally just fired. Who I'm sure we don't need a reminder was 2-7 in conference his 1st year, 0-9 in conference his 2nd year and 2-5 in his 5th. How is Bielema any different?

My fired comment was a bit of hyperbole, but I would be really disappointed in the choice and it would make me question future decisions. I think it's a bad fit. And I REALLY like Whitman.

A little late to the game, but I am not in favor of the triple option.

I went to N.C. State and we had to go up against Paul Johnson and the triple option fairly frequently. The offensive lineman average 260, meaning there is little chance they make the NFL. QBs never throw and several of them had to switch to RB to be considered. There is no TE role in the offense and the WR are used sparingly.

After Johnson left Tech, the next staff has had to overhaul everything and they still do not have a viable passing attack after 2 years. Say what you will, Lovie has given us a decent foundation. Get a Fickell, Liepold, or a Dave Clausen from Wake Forest and continue to build. Don’t go triple option, that is essentially the blow up option.

Fun thought exercise on Monken and the pure triple option....how many Big 10 defensive coordinators know how to defend it? How many have experience coaching a defense how to defend it? How many defensive players have seen it live at the college or high school level? How many games can be won just based on schematic advantages Monken would bring? How quickly would other Big 10 defenses adapt?

I love the triple option. Don’t understand how anyone can be bored by it.

When we ran it with juice from the shotgun for a bunch of big runs (especially vs Wisconsin) in the rose bowl year I don’t recall anybody complaining.
Lmao. There is a HUGE difference between running the triple option for a series or two and basing your entire program (recruiting, coordinators and all) on it.

I'm trying to figure out the hate for Bielema. Is it simply because he's perceived as a jerk or is there some documented instances out there? I honestly don't know. Do his coaches or players think he's a jerk? If not, I think he could win here.
He has a calf tattoo of a Hawkeye.... isn’t that enough of a reason to remove him from the interview process?

If we are already talking about the next staff we deserve to lose.

I would guess that it would be like the Princeton offense in basketball. It will work, initially, due to lack of exposure. But facing teams year after year, they will figure it out and eventually, the better team will win. Also, it won't help our defense prepare for the other team's offense. Our scout team will not be able to replicate our opponent.

Clark Lea wasn't high on my list so that's an ideal outcome for Illinois (from my perspective).

18 pages and counting on the search basically 24 hours since the news came out - kudos to all of you at loyalty. Great thread, really informative discussion on all these candidates. My personal favorite among the realistic choices at this point is Leipold but will never count Whitman out for surprises after Lovie and Underwood. Carry on

There are definitely concepts that apply to both Option and Spread Option offenses and the Lox offense during Zook's tenure definitely had some similarities. Teams use option routes, west coast route combinations, and concepts from other offenses. Just because it looks different under cenfer doesn't inherently make it better or worse, just rare.

The tail end of the Blackman years was basically .500%.
Agreed. With no momentum upward, however, and no great progress in the program since the Slush Fund debacle kneecapped it in the '60s. Blackman was a good coach, don't get me wrong, and a good man. The BT was a tough place back then, of course. Limited TV coverage for publicity and Michigan/OSU dominated. But I don't believe Bob ever broke 0.500 in conference besides his first season.

Lol...good catch...I got my codes mixed up!! (London is YXU! oops!

But I stand by my London, Ontario talent eval! I've been on campus at UCLA...it's also insane.....but it's also SoCal and easily explained. As is Knoxville, Austin, Tempe, Miami...etc..etc....huge campuses with 20,000+ college coeds in the south. London has 3 or 4 different small schools and defies logic.

Also, Lance Leipold.
Have any of you been on the LSU campus and looked at the "scenery"? Just asking for a friend. 😂😂

I do not understand Illinois athletics and I have been an Illini fan for 40 + years!
That mystery is what keeps the relationship so fresh and exciting. You know, like when you date someone with borderline personality disorder.;)
