I’m with you in that thought process as well. Still would like to see his classes ranked higher. My only thought is that once he spots his “system guys” he doesn’t care if they are ranked at all. That is what is leading to the low ranked classes but in actuality those are the perfect guys he wants for his scheme. Have to give him a break if he knows exactly what works for his system....

I just cannot see winning with the last ranked classes in the big 10 regardless of fit

Does it matter? point is he won and recruited well and people liked it no matter what he was doing off the court
No I agree. I liked having him as the coach. But I never liked him the way I actually liked Lon Kruger or for that matter liked Lovie. I found Self’s personality and aura off-putting but he could coach. I liked Kruger’s personality and demeanor and he could coach too. Lovie seems like a good man who couldn’t get it done coaching.

In the last 10 years, Northwestern has routinely been in the bottom of the Big Ten in recruiting rankings. 2014 is the only time they did not finish in the 10-14 range (according to 247), ranking 8th that year. If Leipold can translate his system into the B1G, recruiting rankings be d**mned.

It seems like the board has settled on it being LL without too much smoke, imo. I still think much more smoke for BB than LL. What would you think if it ended up being someone without any smoke like a Todd Monken?

My thoughts are that it's tough to get around Leipold signing the dead last class in the MAC in both 2018 and 2020.

Leipold wants to have a cohesive staff that instills his culture throughout the program. He's going to need some serious hired guns on the recruiting side. Illinois is Illinois with Illinois' staff resources. It's gonna be a real challenge to make that fit together and work.
It's tough to rank the MAC recruiting classes. In 2020, nine of the twelve teams have an average recruit ranking within 1 point of the lowest average. For comparison, only three Big Ten teams are within 1 point of the lowest average recruit ranking. So, yeah, last place but almost 4th place.

I’d rather take a chance on one of the young coordinators than LL. LL isn’t a bad hire just definitely not someone to get excited about. I’d prefer an offensive minded, young, charismatic guy with Midwest connections. (Which got me thinking)
How many times has a coordinator with no HC experience been hired @ a P5 school in last 20 years??

When I was a kid in 6th grade maybe, I wrote Kruger a letter telling him how excited I was to have him as our coach. I even talked shop a little, praising Matt Heldman’s court vision, also asked for more minutes for Chukwudebe (he was from Springfield Lanphier and graduated with my sister). He wrote me back! Hand written letter and everything. I will always be a supporter of Kruger. I can’t imagine Self doing that.

I just listened to Loren Tate and Brian Barnhart on Monday Morning Quarterbacks from earlier this week. Following that discussion, I am seriously considering the Monken family for the first time. (I was previously turned off by the Army offensive scheme. However, I'm not so sure we'd necessarily be running it.) I'd like to get both Jeff and Todd. Loren seemed to also be a supporter. In-state recruiting would see a definite uptick!

Surprisingly, however, Loren did not purport to have a leading candidate.

Like we haven't heard this for the last 4 years. Doesn't matter what they are ranked because they get NFL coaching right?!
