Between the free bonus Covid year (and the apparent implication that scholarship limits will be above 85 for the forseeable future), the just announced free transfer waiver for this season, and then the emerging possibility that the NCAA is going to pass a permanent free waiver for any player's first transfer, what our new coach is going to be entering is somewhere between an unprecedented roster construction free-for-all and a basically totally unrecognizable sport.

I feel like I don't have a lot of insight on what the strategic implications are of that, but I sure hope that's a very prominent part of all of these conversations Whitman is having with coaches.

Where did “Wisky” come from? Nobody in Badgerland calls them that. It’s Sconnie.
That just makes me want to call them Wisky now even though I never have before. Missouri doesn’t call themselves Miznoz either but they are Miznoz. And George wanted to be called T-Bone. We all know how that worked out. 73D6368C-8896-4638-9C21-08E209872B31.jpeg

In 1985 my mother was the banquet mgr at Jumers Castle Lodge where the Bears stayed while practicing in the bubble at U of I. I didn't work there but I came and worked a breakfast anyway. Spilt Buddy Ryan's coffee, lol, served sweetness also. My sister showed McMahon around town and I got a pair of his sunglasses and 2 autographed footballs. Still have them, oh to be 20 something again.
I miss that giant stuffed bear.

Also, remember that Auburn measures itself against one program....Alabama. For every single candidate, the first question out of collective Booster Nation is going to be, can he beat Nick Saban and Alabama? I doubt LL would even get to question #2 as a potential candidate.
Malzahn got 3 of the 6 conference losses Bama suffered during his time there.

Give me Sean Lewis, a young current HC with tons of energy, from Chicago who has the number 1 offense in all of college football (over 600 yards per game). LL is 56 years old already. Rather hire a year too early than miss out on him.
Leipold's Buffalo beat Lewis' Kent State 70-41 and rolled up 663 yards of total offense and 515 rushing.

I said it before, how anyone can watch Kent State and Army and tell me it's Jeff Monken whose system won't work in the Big Ten is totally beyond me.

So Auburn agrees to let the AD pay Gus 21 million not to coach, just to swoop in with a MAC coach who’s spent the vast majority of his life in Wisconsin? Doesn’t pass the smell test.
Yeah, not worried about auburn in same pool of candidates. Likely a currently successful power 5 coach. More worried about wherever that coach comes from...that could be same competition pool.

Lewis can hire a top defensive coordinator. He is winning in year two and 3 at the power house Kent St. and took their offense from 128 to number 1. Leipold is in year 6. Leipolds defense gave up 578 yards in that same game.

I know it's a basketball to football analogy, but didn't Bo Ryan have impressive Div III success in Wisconsin for many years prior to ending up in Madison? Fingers crossed that LL can be that guy with similar results in D1 football (if he is the guy).

15 years at UW-Platteville with an .820 winning percentage.

JW mentioned recruiting as a concern during his presser last week.. Does he consider LL, Monken, Lewis over BB given that those guys are still currently recruiting 2021's and 2022's. Where BB hasn't necessarily made those same connections on the recruiting trail with these two classes. Would also think that given one of the college coaches comes here, there might be a few recruits to follow? If I were JW that would cross my mind and bring some weight to the decision. What are your thoughts on that?

My thoughts are that it's tough to get around Leipold signing the dead last class in the MAC in both 2018 and 2020.

Leipold wants to have a cohesive staff that instills his culture throughout the program. He's going to need some serious hired guns on the recruiting side. Illinois is Illinois with Illinois' staff resources. It's gonna be a real challenge to make that fit together and work.

I’m with you in that thought process as well. Still would like to see his classes ranked higher. My only thought is that once he spots his “system guys” he doesn’t care if they are ranked at all. That is what is leading to the low ranked classes but in actuality those are the perfect guys he wants for his scheme. Have to give him a break if he knows exactly what works for his system....

He must have hit Big 2019! Seriously though agree with all, and I think he has shown if last in recruiting those 2 years must be able to recognize gems in the rough and coach them up. But we need some guns. And transfer market is going to be nuts, playing an exciting offense might bring some surprising additions.

Buffalo almost out recruited us this year according to 247. We are 77th. Buffalo is (I think) 89th.

I get the concern, but given the waiver rule being passed, I think it negates any short term disadvantage BB would have with recruits. I love the idea of a guy who won 3 B1G titles, sent multiple legit pros to the next level, and has coached in the NFL making that sales pitch long term.
