If you use your SEC-brain to look at Leonhard, you'd be getting a guy who is winning the film room war within the conference week after week, and we would also be stealing a huge asset from the leading team in our division.

SEC schools don't always make the right hires of course, but that's how they think.

I'd be totally on board with it.
I just really really doubt JW takes the somewhat risky hire with a guy who’s never been HC before AND is like 33 years old

Leonhard actually played longer in the league than Hartline 10 seasons to 7. The fact that he's already a coordinator and one of the best in the country is amazing when you think about it.

Maybe this had been mentioned, what about Chris Petersen?

If it’s a non-minority hire doesn’t it have to go thru the waiting period?

If there is a young coordinator should take risk with, The should pursue Tom Manning, the OC from Iowa State, is another that should get some consideration. Has been an assistant to Campbell ever since Toledo (with a brief detour as the TE coach in Indy in 2018). ISU was a job comparable to Illinois and Manning has played a part into transforming it into a respectable program.

Excitement translates to wins with these young kids. I read your "Lovie sure was "exciting"" with a sarcastic tone. I hope I was correct in doing so?
Well, yes, sort of. Nothing he did was fun or exciting as we all know. But the NFL experience and name behind Lovie was supposed to be.

I have seen his name a few times, but I am surprised their isn't as much talk about Tom Manning-offensive coordinator at Iowa State. It appears to me that he checks just as many boxes than a lot of other names mentioned.

His offensive rankings are are comparable to both Marcus Freeman's and Jim Leonhard's defenses. His offensive's are exciting and put up points, a quality a lot of posters are asking for.
He has spent all his time coaching coaching in the Midwest (Iowa and Ohio) and even got a taste of the NFL as tight ends coach with the Colts.
He is young, but has quite a bit of experience. Has been in coaching for 14 years(3 D3 years, 9 D1, and 1 NFL).
He has seen and helped coordinate the total rebuild of a D1 program first hand at Iowa State, one of the best rebuilds in recent memory.

If I were Whitman I would at least bring Tom Manning in for an interview. IMO ISU is the blueprint Illinois should be trying to follow. Both schools have similar histories and comparable fan bases, recruiting grounds, and facilities.

You don't think Fickell is easily the best candidate available?
I guess I should have clarified that as the best candidate who is realistically available. I don't think Fickell is realistic.
