So I don't know why I'm doing this, but what the hell. How would people feel about LL if he goes out and lays an egg tonight and loses to Ball State? Also, what if BB is putting a staff together that includes Nate as QB coach and John Holocek as LB coach? Not impossible.
Not impossible with LL either. You could probably get all 3 by just splitting the money originally committed to Rod Smith. His assistants/Coordinators were severely underpaid at Buffalo (I think highest paid was 135k) so JW can give each of the 3 significant raises to join LL here. Use the financial flexibility from filling 3 coaching positions for the price of one to give Nate an offer he can't refuse to come back.

Are there any people with decent experience or knowledge of the differences in coaching at college levels? I just go off my perceptions that D1 is an entirely different animal than D3. In my mind D3 is closer to high school than P5 if that makes any sense. And that's probably unfair, but that's why I'm so hesitant on LL and his staff. Like Lovie's D was relatively "simple." I worry that LL's will be as well and once B1G scout it, we'll be in trouble.

BOOM! Feed my ego.
Surprised we haven't heard the name Jason Candle. Repeated number 1 recruiting class in MAC, out recruited Lovie from the MAC. Offense averages 495 yards 325 pass and 169 run. Young coach (41) from the Mt. Union tree 38-21 at Toledo. Just weird we haven't even heard this name.
After that loss to Western Michigan, no thanks.

Miles had 0 coaching experience, analyst and quality control isn't coaching. Miles also wasn't an all american linebacker, nor do I even think he played football.....
I guess I don't really know what analyst and quality control actually do. I just assumed they were like an assistant to the assistant type of thing lol. I figured he was pretty much at least "on" a staff. But yeah, even so it was super minimal. I would choose J 10 times out of 10 over Miles due to his playing experience and passion for the university, but I'm not gonna hold not hiring J against Lovie, if that makes any sense.

In 1985 my mother was the banquet mgr at Jumers Castle Lodge where the Bears stayed while practicing in the bubble at U of I. I didn't work there but I came and worked a breakfast anyway. Spilt Buddy Ryan's coffee, lol, served sweetness also. My sister showed McMahon around town and I got a pair of his sunglasses and 2 autographed footballs. Still have them, oh to be 20 something again.

Lol, sounds like your sister and McMahon were real close.

;) Awesome story though

You forgot Dee Brown in there somewhere...

How many times has a coordinator with no HC experience been hired @ a P5 school in last 20 years??
Kirby Smart, Jeremy Pruitt, Mark Stoops, Mike Stoops, Dan Mullen, Shane Beamer (technically was never a coordinator), Clark Lea, Mike Leach, Pat Narduzzi, Manny Diaz, Jeff Hafley, Jonathan Smith, Justin Wilcox, Dave Aranda, James Franklin, Mel Tucker, Greg Schiano, and that's just a once-over not counting internally promoted assistants.

It's very common. The common denominator of course being big time success at big time schools as a coordinator.

Was at local restaurant with friends, during the final week or so of SELF.....one of my friends asked Bill if he was really going to Kansas....." oh no, that;s just a rumor, I like it here at Illiinois", two days later he's the Kansas coach. Kinda smells....
I hated to see Self leave and now root against Kansas probably more than any team that isn’t a traditional Illini rival, but what did you and your friend think he was going to say?

I don't disagree. I do however think J could recruit. He just has a personality that I think can resonate with kids.
If J wanted to coach, he could be coaching, somewhere, instead of being a Champaign realtor.

I agree. I was just trying to throw out some assistant coach names that we would be familiar with. I honestly don't see why Nate would come here, unless that ISU OC gets the head job and makes him our OC. Matt Campbell is about the best HC to work under right now if you're Nate. He'll be at a blue blood in the next 2 years and Nate very well could be OC in that timespan or soon after.

This would be the most boring Illini coaching search ever if it breaks tomorrow morning and Leipold is at the podium on Sunday. Which is a credit to Whitman I guess.
To me that would be the most un-Whitman-like hire. Obviously I don't know the true circumstances. Maybe Leipold completely blew the doors of the interview and JW was convinced he was the guy. But a LL hire is the easy hire. I think it'll still work. He's better than what we've seen the last 5 years.

To me a JW hire would be somehow convincing Fickell, or bringing in a young coordinator like Leonhard or Manning. I think JW would love to bring in BB, but is very self-conscious about his, and the school's image, and is hesitant to take the chance of damaging that image with a BB hire.

I will be underwhelmed if it is LL but I’ll be happy to root for him and the team. My level of confidence is significantly higher with BB but I get that he’s not kosher enough. I think Monken should have gotten a sniff. To say he runs the triple option is misleading. Lots of single back sets in his “flex” bone scheme.

Sports Illustrated has "sources" claiming Bielema and Leipold have interviewed with JW:

First that I have seen that Whitman met with LL at his home in Buffalo, but that makes sense with some other info that is out there.

Did the Clawson rumors/look fall off for some reason?
I trust Football Scoop a lot, they are the best connected coaching carousel people out there, and the names they put out there were Bielema, Leipold, Monken and Clawson.

Sure sounds like it's Leipold, but if it's not him, I think the rest of that list is probably the place to look.
