The new basketball uniforms

There's more history and success in those uniforms (Duke, UNC, PSU football). They really are iconic to not only fans of those schools but fans everywhere. We only have that with our older (sorry!) fan base who watched those games, but since then we changed uni's and and our image many times and therefore that style isn't well known by the masses.

When you see a PSU or Michigan helmet, you know the history behind it whether youre a USC, Illinois, or Virginia Tech fan. That can't really be said for the "Fighting Illini" jerseys, as much as I want it to be.

You can't fake iconic. You either have it or you don't and we don't.

And the only part of Illinois' branding that really stood out and connoted a sense of history was the Chief symbol, but alas.

We are doing absolutely the right thing by moving on with a new image :shield::shield::shield:

Does anyone know where you can buy the throwback jerseys from?

Haven't made them available yet but I'd have to imagine nike sells them later in the year. Maybe after 1/1. They didn't sell much this year (1 jersey and 2 pairs of shorts) so they'll likely offer these at some point. Too much money to be made.

Unc has changed their fonts. Not that it matters, just an observation from looking at the pictures above.

An interesting tidbit from one of those rumor-mongering twitter accounts:

Victory Illinois...‏

Illinois talking to Nike about a redesign of the men's basketball uniforms.
No wonder we saw the '89 uni's so much.

It's obvious to me what the next step should be.

Everybody hates the zig-zag and loves the '89 throwbacks. So scrap the zig-zag and use the "columns" striping from the football uniforms as the striping on the basketball jerseys too, like the silver uniforms currently, but with a contrasting color (orange with a white middle on the blue, orange with a blue middle on the white, and white with a blue middle on the orange):

Then, using the new font and number template, make the white and orange jerseys say "Fighting" on top and "Illini" on the bottom like the throwbacks. Leave the blue road jersey as "Illinois".

And also, on the home whites, ditch the two-tone lettering. Go with blue lettering and orange numbers, those combos should always nod to these jerseys, that just pops as "us" out of generic orange and blue templates

Done and done. Then all we have to do is make the shield the primary logo and the rebrand is complete. #TeamShield :shield::shield::shield:

I'm afraid, though, that if we get updated by Nike that they'll go with the skimpy looking wrestling singlet-looking jerseys that seems to be their new thing

Do not like.

Ah the rebrand. Did Thomas handle that as well? Yet another failure that we can pin on him.

The rebrand was awesome, and will continue to be awesome.

It's a platform that you build on.

Also, Beckman and Groce had significant input on their team's uniforms. Might be the best thing Beckman ever did. I liked the new uniforms Toledo got under Beckman too. Maybe fashion is his true calling! It sure ain't football...

I feel like Nike has really been slipping the last 5 years with a lot of uniform design. Most of the new basketball uniforms and design ideas either seem weird (basketball singlet thing) or lazy.

Also, I follow the US National Soccer team, and their jerseys have been laughable for quite a few cycles now... especially since Nike seems to be recycling the same design template for tons of prominent teams.

Has there been some change in leadership in the past decade or am I just getting old and bitter?

I've attended games with friends that are fans of other B10 schools and other schools in the Midwest, and I can say that a lot of people outside of Illinois have no idea what the shield is or even that it is associated with Illinois.

I think that some parts of the rebrand were successful, others not so much.

And I personally like the rebrand as a whole and the shield, FWIW. :shield:

That's because we suck, not because the Shield is bad.

I love the "singlet"-style jerseys.

Another thing to watch...players are rolling their shorts now. Bet we see Nike continue to go shorter with shorts.

Do whatever the kids want, obviously.

But it's gonna be tough to fit all the lettering for "Fighting Illini" on one of those tiny jerseys. Look at Michigan for goodness sakes:

That's like size 12 font!

Yep. Nike just following the trends.

Figured that was coming.

It's probably true though, as I think the shield is pretty "meh" too. It just all seems so generic to me. I'm not saying we need something crazy like the 2006 Washington Wizard's gold jerseys or some over the top logo, but just something more unique than a shield with an I on it.

Then again, I'm not offended by it nor do I hate it.... soooo mission accomplished!

On senior night, I sat next to a group of Illinois fans that didn't know what the shield was. One in their group mentioned the shield logo and the others had no clue what he was talking about.

Probably closer to 144, but trivialities.

Yeah for whatever reason the kids are liking really tight fitting shirts/jerseys and shorter shorts now. Kids who should be wearing XL are trying to fit mediums. We have kids who triple roll their shorts so they stop mid quad. I think it's almost necessary to re-examine jerseys every couple years to adapt to the styles the new kids prefer.

Looks like we still have work to do, Team Shield.
