If you ask most graphic designers (and I would agree with them) the motion W is terrible. A thing of the past, with shadows, etc. I also think the Cal C is also bad, awful logo. From all 3, Northwestern is the best, but even Northwestern is moving away from the stylized version for all academic purposes.

We're talking about two different things, though. I agree that the motion W is kind of ugly (shadows!) but there's no mistaking what it means.

Not sure what Cal C is, I mean the Chicago Bears.

It's of a particular time, sure. And it doesn't pass the "you'd know it out of context" test as well as you would expect. But there's enough to it that it beats the Block I.

Another one that looks dated as hell is West Virginia:

But it's iconic. Any college sports fan knows it.

I love the shield. The problem for the casual fan is that it is not prominent on the football or basketball uniforms. In basketball, it is only on the waistband, and in football it is only on the neck. If it was on the helmet or shorts, people would recognize and identify it more, not to mention if it was on the court/field. I think it will be more prominent in future uniform designs. I definitely see it on at least an alternate helmet and I think it should be on the basketball shorts, or maybe the I on one leg and the shield on the other.

I've always thought that the new lettermark on uniforms is generic, as bad as the slant ILLINOIS. I prefer the traditional arched lettering.

:). I was banned over my criticism of the rebrand and that stupid shield when it happened. After some time, I still hate it.

The shield reminds me of something Wal-Mart would have on their college athletic apparel. One of those super generic designs that they use because they don't have an agreement to sell licensed merchandise. Suffice to say, I am not a fan either.

On a side not to this, Wisconsin is strict on copy right infringement. And I don't mean screen print companies trying to make a buck selling Wisconsin gear without a license. A lot of Colleges/universities are lax on mascots being used by high schools or club teams. Wisconsin has always been active to seek out high schools that use the motion W and send out cease and desist letters. Kansas is the same way with the JHawk.

As long as the new Block I is the primary logo, we will never, and I mean NEVER EVER, stop seeing this:

Never.

It's just not different enough, nor suggestive enough of what school it is.
I think part of seeing this logo still is related to the contract with the rebrand we have with Nike. Part of what Nike does with a rebrand, is set up exclusive rights for apparel sales to use the new mascot for a couple years. And I'm talking the shirts you see for sale at the book store, sporting goods stores ect. So vendors outside of Nike that produce apparel, still have to use the old logos.

As far as on the field options, would it be possible to include the shield logo opposite the Big Ten logo's on the 35 yard lines. It would at least put it in more of a predominant spot.

Sure, but that was over two years ago. And that was shield-specific IIRC. The new block I was available from day 1.

It's not the stuff being sold in stores anyway, it's the use of the image as a graphic on TV, in newspapers, and especially on the internet.

You know why recruits always use the old logo to announce their offers? Because that's what's on google when you search for "Illinois logo". You know why that's what's on Google? Because that's what's on all the kids' Twitters.

The only way to break that cycle is to go Shield-first.

Agreed. I think the rebrand was a 50/50 deal. The new lettering is atrocious and the I's look like 1's and I don't like that at all. The shield is awesome though. If used and pushed to the forefront, it would become a recognizable symbol regardless of the color or placement. It is a great design. Now Nike get us new lettering and we're good. Also, please no wrestling singlet jerseys or short shorts. Thanks.

This is silly.

A logo can't increase brand value on its own. It has to be backed by a solid product. As the product improves, so will affinity for the logo.

And some of you are right, a letter as a logo isn't original. That's because we're talking about varsity athletics which have used letters as symbols FOREVER. It's tradition in college athletics. As one of the founding members of the B1G, we shouldn't be worried about Iowa or Idaho stealing our thunder lol. Embrace the tradition.

I have a hat that I wear often. It's monochromatic. Faded blue with a faded blue block I-the old block I..I've had it forever. I've wore this hat to Florida and had people recognize me as being an Illini fan. This was when we were good which again, speaks to my original point.

While I like its use as a secondary logo, I would really prefer to not use the shield on the football helmets. If its normal sized, then the I itself ends up being pretty small, and I don't think that makes sense. If you make it jumbo sized, then it looks clunky: like the Buccaneers logo, but with no flowing aspect. I would rather stick to the I, go back to Illinois, or do some other script Illini or Illinois. Or really have no logo at all on the helmet.

I actually don't know anyone who has any sort of affinity towards the shield or cares about it or even likes it. They could discontinue the use of it tomorrow and I wouldn't even notice it is gone. An increased usage of it probably wouldn't change that, as I don't like the shield.

I like the idea of the shield, not so much its implementation. The bottom part looks like a bikini bottom. Change the colors to black and gold, swap out the I for a P, and I'm loving it for Purdue.

Channel 2 news in STL still uses this logo in their graphics when doing their coverage of illini sports. It drives me up the wall. I don't know about the other stations in town, since I primarily watch the evening news on channel 2.

The Fighting Illini jerseys are top notch and are my favorites. Never understood why the players liked the gray ones so much. Personal favorites I guess.

I couldn't help but to laugh and shake my head when I saw this, considering that the coaster directly next to my computer has this logo on it, as does the cup that is sitting on it. :D

As do so many things in my O&B collection. I feel your pain/share your bittersweet love of them!

I like the shield a great deal and wish it was used more. Now you know another person who likes it.
