That is the big question: Did Groce (and staff) fail to develop their potential OR was Groce just misguided in not giving Williams and Jordan enough playing time to grow into the college game OR were these guys just not as talented as advertised?

Well......which one of these three is it?

All three?

Seriously that court storming was pretty embarassing on their part. I think students see it happen on TV and think "I wanna do that" so they find any excuse they can to rush the court. It should only be done if

a) You beat a top 3-5 team and you aren't ranked.
b) You beat the #1 team and you're not in the top 10 or so.
c) You're a mediocre/bad mid major team and you beat a top 25 team with a buzzer beater/exciting finish.

Thanks Seniors! I think having this game at home or possibly Finke stretching the giant out may have made a difference, but didn't happen. Excited for the future.

My UCF buddy said a few minutes before the finish that he was hoping they didn't storm the court. He was embarrassed when they did. Like others mentioned, it was loud in there. I was not expecting that.

JCL hit some beauties in the first half. i was at the game and they looked so slow in the first half walking the ball up against that team is UNFORGIVABLE!!!! The 7ft 6 guy was already set in position more than 5 seconds before the ball crossed the center line. If we pushed it they were tired they only have 6 scholarship players for crying out loud. We never pressured the ball either full court or had any sort of half court trap. if the ball did get into the big guys hands on offense he looked pretty lost with it if he couldn't dunk it. All in all a pretty poor showing regarding Walkers ability to run any sort of quick tempo offense. As they say look forward to seeing the kids who are returning run an offense that moves the ball at something other than a crawl. i think they will know for sure "it is hard to be great"
I definitely agree with the slow part. No idea why we didn't run Takko's !!! up and down the floor.

Just like what happened under Groce, the team waited until it was too late to make their run.

I am late to this thread, so maybe it has been mentioned already, but did anyone find out why Kipper did not play?

Video of the players out at the bar the night before. Nothing bad or anything but I don't think kipper is of age and, well, they probably shouldn't be at a bar the night before.

It's amazing that this team always fell back to their default persona. No matter the success of playing the right way, they could never sustain it.

Anyway, thanks seniors for being part of Illini Nation. Looking forward to a fresh start.

Can't help but wonder about the impacts of this on the lethargic start we had yesterday...

Hey everyone - longtime lurker who finally got around to registering a username...

What about Thorne? Admittedly I hadn't had the time this year to dedicate to basketball games, but it hit me about halfway through the second half that he hadn't played, which then caused me to go back and find that his 18 mins against Valpo were his first minutes in 7 games?

Follow up: Walker said he and Nichols were being disciplined last night, but I expected Thorne to be a big factor this year, and he ended up having a very disappointing season

Some points from "the other side". Sorry if this is TL;DR

1. I'm glad your team kept fighting until the end. It made for an exciting finish. We knew you guys weren't happy with the season. But UCF's season officially became the best ever. Hence, some of the excitement by our fans.

2. The reason for storming the court had little or nothing to do with who we played. It could have been Joe Schmuckatelly University. There were actually multiple valid reasons for the storm. UCF has NEVER won a NIT or Tourney game until this season (and we weren't expected to even make it this far at the start of the season with a new coach and all). To win a quarter final game and reward this team with a trip to NYC is HUGE! This was the final home game for several seniors that were huge for the program. If not for early season injuries, we may have finished ranked. Being the first sellout crowd in this arena should tell you how much UCF has been waiting for a pulse from our basketball program and considering reports say our scout team that moves up next season has dominated this years squad, we are really excited for next season.

3. Not that ya'll care.... but to debunk some "fake news" posted on here about UCF... UCF shed the commuter school status about 7 years ago thanks to massive housing complex projects and UCF now houses more students on campus than UofTexas and isn't far behind Ohio State per student housing. Yes some basic degrees can be obtained mostly online just like they can be at schools like Michigan, Ohio State, and Florida who have all partnered with UCF in the endeavor. Concentric circles allow for easy foot traffic to classes around the beautiful campus. Driving is mostly a perimeter thing with garages all on the outskirts. Private off-campus housing around the campus is also one of the largest in the nation and has a UCF-run transportation system to support it.

Again, sorry for the long post. Come visit us sometime.... after we get back from NYC. ;)

Good job UCF.

You get off of my lawn people are over the top. Who are you to dictate what college kids find fun. They were happy there team won good for them. Now if you want to bring up the safety issue that is a different story.

lol, it will be weird to not have Tracy around. When Tracy started playing at U of I, I didn't have any kids. Now I have two, and one of them just turned 5.

Malcolm is going to make good money in Europe (worst case scenario) and so will Morgan. Their efforts are appreciated. However, this regime....from staff to roster, needs a complete overhaul. It's good to start fresh. Knowing the outcome of these games before they started was depressing. Time to turn the page to bigger and better things for all.

Considering all of the scoring, size, and whatever leadership this team had that they are losing, I think this rebuild is going to be a lot bigger project than many fans realize.

Losing Malcom and Mav is huge. As good as Tilmon might be, it's unlikely he's as effective year 1 as Mav was this year. No heir apparent to Hill either. Tracy also added a ton this year, but he's more "replaceable". If everyone progresss in a big way we might have a shot at the tournament, but I wouldn't count on it.

TJL/Frazier
JCL/Jordan/Damonte
Kipper/DJ/Pickett
Black/Finke
Tilmon/No one (Finke?)

That's assuming we keep the class together. If we get that OKSt transfer that would be huge, but then you gotta assume DJ or Jordan leaves, which I always hate to see. Smith coming would be great too, but we already have a glut 1-3 and a freshman is unlikely to solve any of our problems.

That was supposed to be DJW. Groce was a good guy, but I'll always been upset at him for not developing DJW properly.

Groce did right by Hill. It's possible DJW just didn't have the drive or talent to develop into that player. It's also possible it's groce's fault. but he seemed to be OK with player development just based on Hill and Mav. That being said a lot of other guys never developed (Jordan, DJW, Tate, the big that that transferred last year).
