I guess my point is he does not need a nuclear shooting night to stuff the stat sheet. That’s very rare for a freshman.
5/15 isn’t THAT bad either.
Settled too much from deep in the 2nd half. No clue why Z sat the majority of the 2nd when the penetration and lob was there at will
Tonight really was the case of complacency on defense helping the other team find their groove. Once it became a game and the team locked back in, the legs were just not there.
Not going to be upset if we respond strong in the last 3. Learning moment for when it matters, just like every loss.

This will certainly be an historical and epic loss that will rate top five in Illini hoops history. As much as I dislike Cronin, I must give a tip of my hat to the Bruins players (all except Bil-a-dough the dirtbag) who did not quit and played a pretty smart game the last 35 min. When you get down 33-10, that is tough to do.
My hope is that our guys learned a lesson about playing 40 min. of focused and energetic defense.
This was always possible when playing a team of shorter, quicker kids that can hit shots seemingly all night....a task of which they have proven before tonight that they are capable. I was leery of that happening and stated so in the pre-game thread....only to watch it come true. But it was only three seasons ago that we watched Terrance and gang do the same to the Bruins....so I guess it just makes me appreciated the fickleness of the game even more.
Regardless, a tip of my hat to Hummer and Wags for their efforts during the entire game. Poor Keaton sure takes a beating with little to show for it and is maybe the only B1G superstar that does so. What a great kid and player. And Ben was tremendous tonight in so many ways. Keep it up old man!!! (He is 48 years old isn't he....and still playing college ball with kids?) He could make a living with his MD degree doing heart surgery on Loyalty game thread posters.

As someone pointed out earlier in the thread, they could run the baseline on that inbounds so putting (and keeping) someone on the passer would have been tough and that player would be useless on D after that
Blown a 23-point lead this late in the season? I’m calling bull!!!! on that.
Lost a 1 point OT road game Q1 to a team much in a similar vein to MSU, where fouls were touchy and the other team was basically allowed to beat the ever loving crap out of the Illini starters, to the point where 4 of them had to leave the game for a bit to tend to various injuries.
I mean, the last second shot sucks because that's a really difficult position for a defense to be in. You can't foul there because the only thing worse than losing on a last second shot is losing by a free throw with time expired. But this game was lost when we didn't step on their throats in the first half.

To KW’s defense UCLA was just pounding him the entire game and getting away with it most of the time
When Mirk, Tomi, Andre and Keaton go 2 of 18 from 3 then maybe drive the ball instead of taking a 28 footer up 1 early in the clock. I know Keaton has some huge shots and Andre has shot it better lately. Late in the clock fine but not early in that spot when we are getting to the line. Keaton and Sndre were doing great getting to the line and i wish i had seem more from them and Boz
5 of 15 overall shooting and 1 of 6 from three. 19 points on 15 shots is wildly inefficient and can't happen.
His turnover right before the end of the first half can't happen either. That whole play was a mess.
However, he did other things well, as you noted.
There were a lot of issues tonight over the last 29 minutes. If there was a true player of the game for the losing side, it would have been Ben H.
We can really do without people like you trying to sugarcoat this disaster.
If somebody would have tried to stop the ball or stand in the way of the runner the time would not have mattered they would have been forced to shoot from at least three point range.. and they probably would have missed and we would have won but nobody stopped the guy with the ball and I don't know why I mean it's confounding to me.

Hopefully everyone can take a step back and be thrilled, WE ARE THE TEAM that just got upset after that happened and are clearly ready to be one of approximately 14 or less teams who have a true Final 4 chance.
UCLA on the other hand, just pulled off the upset they HAD to have to get into the dance. That used to be us, we would be the team who desperately needed that win to get in!
