I didn't watch the entire game, but from what I saw, a free throw disparity makes sense. Northwestern is more of a jumpshooting team, especially against a team with a very large man to protect the rim. Purdue plays through said large man, and uses him to get their guards downhill where they might draw fouls.

Basically, I'm not surprised that Purdue gets more free throws than their opponents. All because of Edey.

I'd agree! I had season tickets four years from 2000-2004. That place rocked! Frankie, Sergio, Griffin, Lucas, Krapala, Bradford, Archibald, Dee, Deron, Luther, Augustine, Powell, Harrington, and the list goes on, there are many more. That place would go crazy! It was different then! Still very good. But would love to see it up a notch. Home court is a real thing!

While the difference between Purdue (get the ball inside) and NW (more jump shots) is a plausible theory (I haven’t seen a shot chart) I still think the disparity was far too much.

I could see double the FTs for Purdue, maybe even 3 times as many, though that would be pushing it. But nearly 6 times as many FTs?? That’s ref ineptitude.

For reference, when Purdue played at NW, they still won the FT battle, but it was 41 to 32.

Much closer to what I’d imagine seeing considering style of play and home court advantage.

Another Top 25 team in danger of dropping a home game against an unranked opponent tonight...New Mexico is in a rockfight w Boise State in the second half.

Nah… they’re still soft, don’t play much defense. At some point before the season ends they’ll fall back to Earth with their shooting percentages & we’ll remember why they lost to Chicago State..

We need to get our bite back defensively. Would like to finish top 20 in adjusted defense. Right now we are 33, but Terrence was easily our best perimeter defender before his suspension. His play on Thornton showed he is close to being back. I’m also hoping Dre can provide some bite as an on ball defender for smaller quicker guards.

But agree on NW and Wisconsin too. Just feels like they are both on about a 5 week heater. Think both will cool off some and they will drop a few games the second half of the year.

Sorry NW couldn’t pull that one out last night. Would have been great being tied with Purdue after 10 games. Oh well. If we want to win the BIG we have little to no margin for error, but with our full squad no reason we can’t go 8-2 or 9-1 over our last 10.

A +16 disparity would have been about right. A +38 is downright obscene at any level of basketball.

I just don't think you can look at that stat and make a determination. There is more to it than that. Edey doesn't need to do much impact a shot, which means he doesn't foul drivers often, therefore they don't drive. They shoot jump shots instead, which don't draw as many fouls.

I know we want to hate on Purdue, but I try hard not to be biased.

I watched that Glenbard West team when they made it to state a couple years ago. Entire starting 5 plus the first player off the bench went D-I. 2 of the starters went to West Point and another went to Princeton. The first player off the bench was Paxton Warden, who was a PWO on the Illini roster last season, but decided to transfer back home and go to D-II Lewis University.
Yea - that one was a big miss by us. From what I know OA and Chin were not as high on him and didn't pursue him, and by the time Chester and TA got on board and we made a push it was too late. Roger Powell did good job locking that one down for GU. Huff is going to be a beast in a couple years.
