I take it neither of you are proponents of calling a game the same in the first 30 seconds of the game and the last 30 seconds of the game.
As someone who has officiated over 100 games in my younger days, the actual shot was unencumbered and the hand on the hip is not inhibiting the shot nor the motion toward the basket. It is, in an officiating sense, a hand check. My opinion only.

If that level of contact was called all game, then call it. If not, then don't. IMO, this was a very rough game for that foul to be called.
I’m all about consistency. And yeah, I’d agree with this take.

If they allowed that little hand on the hip action all game, they should have swallowed their whistles.

Though, there is a difference between not calling and not seeing it.

Maybe this was the first time that ref saw it outright all game and made his call.

I agree that was a foul at end of the game. But the officials have been letting them mug each other rhe entire game. You can't make a call like that, to soft. That was a touch foul to go to FF, wow.

But if that play happens early in the game, should they call it? Yes or no?

If you call that type of contact a foul all game long, both teams will end up shooting 40+ free throws. It wasn’t officiated that way until the last 30 seconds.

It’s just like the Super Bowl. You’re telling me no DB held a WR the entire game until the last game defining play? Of course they did. It just wasn’t called every time

Terrible officiating. But McDermott also should be grilled. Nembhard was so ineffective all game and obviously injured. Continued to try and initiate offense through him it was so bad. Also why just hand SDSU such an easy last possession. At least try and force another tough inbound pass after the gift turnover. The press was effective and they just back off and then commit a terrible foul with 6 seconds to go to give them last possession/shot. Really bad stuff by McDermott.

It was the right call. The ball landed out of bounds at 0.3, but the clock didn't start when it was first touched.
Yes, that is the official explanation. Replay is a pandora's box that will never be closed now. Regardless, tough way to lose a potential trip to the Final 4. If that was IL we would be howling mad.

The ref had a clear look at it. It was just the nuance of the play. The lane opened way up, refs eyes were on the play with no traffic in front of him and the jersey was clearly pulled. You can't swallow the whistle just because it's late in the game.

I'd probably be more pissed about the number of missed bunnies around the basket late if I was a Creighton fan.
That being said now I'll have to listen to bitching about this officiating for as long as it takes their fanbase to move on and start worrying about their seats at the CWS.
Clark Kellogg is over this.

in this game and nearly all tourny games they have been allowing defense to have constant hands all over the offense hips, back, stomach .... (and also for offense to push off...). It wasn't a foul in most of the 2,380 minutes of game time so far but now it was??? btw - I think they should call all the D handsiness and offense pushoffs fouls - eventually it will stop. and if they don't I wish that we would play D and O with our hands in the way it is being allowed - these teams have had a definitive advantage in the tourny (and the last two tourny's as well)

Considering the shooter‘s body didn’t react to the “dislodge” by the defender until after the ball was released, I’d say the contact wasn’t much of a factor. Of course that’s easy to say when you slow it down and look at it multiple times. 😀Officiating is a tough job. They are making judgments in real time.

Not so random question: Why can’t you shoot the ball from behind the backboard? I.e. What’s the purpose of that rule? It’s not like there’s an unfair advantage unless the shooter is directly behind the backboard and you could argue that the defender can’t block the shot through the backboard. Just seems silly.
