Gonzaga is helped by the weak conference schedule in that they don't get beat up physically. How many injuries have the Illini had in the last 3 years that cost them a great deal.

Gonzaga would be better served if they moved to a Power conference. If its the Pac12 or wherever, they need better competition than what they are getting in the WCC

Yeah, because the Pac-12 has all those national championships over the last 20 years.

Gonzaga has made the championship game twice in the past 7 years. The Pac-12 hasn't made the championship game since 2006.

I think Gonzaga has seen teams make a jump to a tougher league and either eventually or almost instantly regret it. Wichita State leaving the MVC for the American comes to mind, as does Temple leaving the A10 for the American.
Gonzaga can have a year that is a little bit down and still give themselves a legitimate shot to win the league and the autobid. There is something to be said to the recruiting pitch that goes with that. Also, the WCC is pretty good at the top. I know BYU is leaving for the Big 12, but St. Mary's has been a legitimate contender for years. They have been a 5 seed for 2 tournaments in a row. Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount are both dangerous teams that are on the build too. It's VERY WEAK at the bottom, but the league as a whole is not a total dumpster fire.
Jumping to a power 5 is a little of a double edged sword. I think there is a lot to be said about getting in the habit of winning. There is also something to be said about facing adversity enough times to be comfortable in tight games.
I think the WCC has been good enough the past two seasons to test the Zags occasionally, but they typically have a significant advantage in talent.
This was probably the worst Gonzaga team in several years, and they were still elite. They got stomped last night, but that’s more about UConn than Gonzaga IMO.
Mark Few has a pretty great gig.

Gonzanga had brought in some serous $$$$ for itself and the teams in the WCC over the years.

I would guess the television revenue per team in the Power 5 conferences is greater than the WCC deal with ESPN/CBS.

How have they won with Hurley? That guy has lost in the first round the last two years… Obviously, he can’t coach. 🤣

Consistent improvement. This is what Hurley has done at UConn by Kenpom;

2018-19: #98
2019-20: #52
2020-21: #21
2021-22: #22
2022-23: #1

Now that it’s built, I think he will sustain it. It’s not been built on just a couple elite players.

UConn plays 9 guys 13+ minutes a game, but nobody plays more than 30+. It’s very deep team that is well balanced.

I have stated for several years. How the officials in Big10 call games vs March madness does every big10 team a huge disservice. This tournament I have watched several officials from big10 swallow whistles for entire games, it bat crap crazy the way they slow down conference games. Making them hard to watch. Hurts all of our players and recruiting.

Dan Hurley took over a Wagner program that went (5-26), a Rhode Island program that went (7-24) and a (14-18) sanctioned UConn program. Hurley has taken over smoldering craters.

Just saw a sequence where a kid had a complete fistful of the back of Kalkbrenners jersey up around the name and pulled him down while he pulled himself up for a rebound. No call. How somebody didnt see that is beyond me

I wish they’d get rid of the “hook and hold” flagrant foul rule. Just call it a foul. There’s way more violent things that happen on a basketball court that aren’t called flagrant as than hook/holds.

Was there some horrible shoulder dislocation incident that I missed that caused this?

Because you can hurt a guy doing that, but it’s a contact sport, you can hurt a guy doing a lot of things.

It just exists to be a long, momentum-killing, inherently hard to determine review, total self-own for the sport.

SDSU 5/25 in the 2nd half still only down 4. This has been one ugly game

Exactly. It kills the flow of the game. I’m fine using reviews to determine possession. But if 3 refs don’t see a foul in real time, then play on. No reviews.

The hook and hold rule was created in response to Isaac Haas of Purdue getting pulled to the ground and injured (broken elbow). It happening in the NCAA tourney and hosed Purdue's tourney hopes.

Google Isaac Haas hook and hold to see the video.

Can’t remember his name. Big guy on Purdue.

Haas?

I think it was Isaac Haas, who ended up with a broken elbow, that largely contributed to the rule being what it is now.

Lol, third!
