The way he is playing now/his contract situation, I don't think they would ever get the proper return on Sale. He is that good. But could you get enough for him to fill a lot of the holes and make the team that much better.

Yep, the $64,000 question. And line-up wise, we have a LOT of holes to fill!

BTW, if you guys watched the game last night, did you see that pathetic run-down? And Alexi's piece-of-crap throw to start it, that fortunately Beckham dug out of the dirt? Geez Louise...

I'm starting to think Alexei may have some money on the games

Bob, did you say something bad about Danks again yesterday ??? :D

LOL!!! I did roll my eyes when I checked to see who was on the mound...

Smards this aft, hope he fares better than his last outing against the O's...in the empty ballpark...

Went to game today. Talk about up and down. Shark with a no hitter into the 5th, then can't even few to the win as Putnam gives up two run homer.

Home run robbing, game saving catch by Garcia in the 9th. Too bad another small crowd to witness.

I swear, if I see 1 more perfect pitch (to hit), first ball fastball strike right down the heart of the plate and a Sox batter just looks at it...

I'm sure Jose Quintana is racing through the clubhouse thanking all the guys for their whopping run support this eve...SMFH...

It's mindblowing that this has been going on for the better part of 3 years with him. The W is pretty much an irrelevant pitching statistic at this point, but you can almost count on less that 2 runs every time he takes the hill. I'd love to see the metrics. I'd bet there's not a pitcher out there that's even close in terms of lack of run support the last 3 seasons. There's not ANY way the two can be related right? His pace? I'm at a loss.

Clueless as well, Bailey. One thing I know for certain...sumbeetches gotta start being aggressive at the plate. Guess fastball first pitch, unless it's above the belt...JUMP ON IT!!! Goddam better than a take, then another take on a slider or change up, and now down 0-2 in the count.

Doesn't look like effin rocket science to me. We'll see what tonight brings...

I will pass on guys being aggressive just to be aggressive, and guessing on fastballs, and opt for guys being smart and have an actual approach at the dish. And they have not been smart. Alexei has always been a free swinger but this year has been bad. Going after bad first pitches when he should be patient with runners in scoring position. Or guys swinging out their damn shoes when all you need is something to the right side. You don't see a lot of productive outs from this team.

With you here. We've fostered a culture of horrible plate discipline, Alexei being the absolute worst. Viciedo was baffling too.

Cubs fan here, getting familiar with your team before the series. Two questions?

1. Why is Flowers getting so much more play than Soto? He isn't THAT much better than Soto with the glove (actually, according to most defensive metrics, Soto's been better this year), and your team could use whatever added pop it can get.

2. Why is Micah Johnson still raking at AAA when Ramirez and Sanchez have been sucking out loud? Wouldn't it make sense to get whatever table scraps you can for Ramirez (who looks like he desperately needs a change of scenery), move Sanchez to short and start Johnson at 2B?

I'll take a crack at it

I think the answer here is our pitchers love pitching to him. Particularly Sale who constantly goes out of his way to credit Flowers for his success. But like many positions on this team, neither options are even replacement level.

Micah was really, really bad when given his chance this year. He was an absolute butcher at 2B who occasionally put outfielders at risk. He's not much a hitter either. He'll slap some singles in front of outfielders and leg out dribblers but he has next to no pop. Many are calling for his return, but I'd rather stick with Sanchez because he's vastly improved our infield defense. Again, neither are really major leaguers.

Ramirez is a deep cut. We should have dealt him when we had the chance last year. I would hope their shopping him to whoever is interested, but that may be nobody at this point.

Guys, that's not what I'm saying. Watching the past few games, particularly the Toronto series, the opposing pitchers, IMO, were pretty grooving a fastball right down the middle, first pitch...and our guys were just taking them. Eaton, Abreu, Cabrera, LaRoche. I mean, I'm watching these pitches and salivating, they were just so good to hit. So now all the guys are down 0-1, opposing pitches are coming back with down-and-in sliders and sinkers, and now we're looking at a whole bunch of 0-2 and 1-2 counts, putting our batters in the defensive posture...

I agree with you on what you see.

I think the problem however is that these guys are just not hitting. Because there is no power, they are trying to work pitchers deep into the counts. Unfortunately, because we lack power, the pitchers are just throwing fastballs down the middle.

I don't have a solution. I'd favor more first-pitch-fastball aggressiveness, but our guys are so bad that they can't differentiate an aggressive approach from swinging at everything.

On another note, Smard seems to be elevating his value. That's good. The counter side is that we may be winning just enough games to give Hahn a reason to not deal.

My irrational hatred for the northsiders will never cease. Awesome looking box score.

Should we have a fire sale, I hope the Dodgers get the goods and not the Cubs.

I don't know Bailey. The pitching has been great (not awesome) as of late, even Rodon and his blistered slider finger today, the gloves have shown up better as of late, 4 under .500...

Rose colored glasses, I suppose. Besides, today is my birthday, my brothers whole family was at the game (ALL Scrubbies fans!), so I'm pretty happy right now. To take 2 out of 3 at Wrigley? I'd be REAL happy!!!

Happy belated birthday Bob. I think we discussed this last year, but you share a birthday with my mom!

1-0, not a bad birthday present.

Thanks Jim, AWESOME birthday!! And a great big happy belated to your mom! My family is a 10th birthday family. Me, my brother on 10/10, my dad on 6/10. my mom on 3/10. When a 10th of a month rolls around, we have to stop and think!

Todays W was even better! Took the series from the northsiders regardless of tomorrow's outcome. Quintana keeps it up tomorrow, the boys do what they're supposed to out in the field and at the plate...we'll sweep. Wouldn't that be a hell of a way to go into the AS break!

Really? I couldn't care less about the Cubs. But, I've been away from Chicago for some time.

The boys are making it more and more difficult to justify a fire-sale (Trading Chris would make easy headlines wouldn't it?).

I think that my main hope is that they do not stand still. If they don't sell, I hope they buy with an eye on next year. Get a 3B or a SS if either comes available, and try to keep Smard in the offseason. But really, as long as they show some vision and do something for either this/next year or the long-term health of the team, I can at least see the logic.

Likewise, geographically. Just the way I was raised. A class thing.

I still think we could & should make some serious moves. We have enough pitching depth to deal, say, Quintana, who could bring a huge haul on the market. We're probably a second wild card team at best in 2015, and I still cringe thinking about wasting Sale's best years moving forward. Hahn has to keep building.

Quintana has such a team friendly deal I don't know if you want to move him. Sale, Quintana, Rodon, and Fulmer sounds like a nice 1-4 a few years from now. And I think it may be to early in the contracts they signed to move guys like Melky, Robertson, and LaRoche. Samardzija has to be the guy they move that brings anything back. And it needs to be a mlb ready prospect. Not a kid in A ball.
