Wisconsin 25, Illinois 21 Postgame

Guess playing 10 on 11 defensively with a safety 25 yards off the ball, and lettin them gut us with the run, wasn't the right call afterall.

Disagree teams lose due to calls by refs but we lost because we didn’t play 60 minutes took off after Newton got kicked and the last drive of the 1st half. We are young with out much depth. Only so much coaching can do. We had our opportunities but didn’t make the plays.

Of course they do....but not in this manner.....is the qualifying part of my statement.

The referees did not come close to costing us this game.

Couple of the oldest tricks in the book to run against a young, poorly coached, or low iq defense to create confusion--- Tackle eligible play or swinging gate. Throw in no timeouts to reset/ adjust- and you just got outplayed. Hats off to the Wiscy OC.

Bielema clearly upset with officiating in post game presser

He should be … He got ZERO explanation from that white hat … It’s an absolute joke … And it’s not just the Newton call … Its every week … And the responses he gets back to inquiries are laughable … I wish I could share them without getting in trouble … But you don’t see this in the SEC … And if the Big Ten is gonna be this “power conference” … They better get it tightened up …

And NONE of that excuses how we finished that game … Thats ultimately on our staff and on our players … But the refs certainly didn’t officiate the game correctly and that had an impact on the outcome of the game and there’s no denying that …

The terrible Newton targeting call gave all the mojo to bucky...........He made contact with his hands to the chest of the QB and then his helmet barely touched the QB.........

The timeout management was horrendous.....I thought so when we called time out early in the third quarter that it might be a problem later on.........

The next to last TD by bucky was a plum interception chance or at least bat it down.......

This loss has taken the wind out of my sails , for sure.........Not that we lost , but the way we did it........If we could of stopped the bucky RB on that 12 yard run before he got the 1st down would have made it 4th down and they probably go for the tying FG......

Oh well , now we are 3-5 with a bye week......road games coming up and Johnny N. will miss the first half of the next game........

Illini FB......................You are really a fanatic if you live and die by it.......Alas , I am guilty of such fanaticism....I really really am..........

I hurt all over ............I really really do..........Everything is fine ..................Goodnight sweet Illini fanatics........................
The bigger problem here Pru, is that many of the "fans" here, are not fans. Google the definition, and more than half the posters in this thread do not come close to meeting the definition of "fan".

I should know better than to come here after a tough loss and a few adult beverages . . .

I did learn a few things from these announcers. Apparently we have a Coach Looney. The state is pronounced Illinoise and the team is the Illinis.

Glad you could confirm what everyone was texting me … Those guys must’ve been terrible … And very pro Wisconsin … I heard they said “it’s winning time for Wisconsin” about 18 times in the last 2 minutes …

Was at the game and the TD where we were in great position to intercept or bat down was killer. Also, the holding call where we completed pass for first down was tough. The replay I saw at game did not look like holding. How did it look on TV?

Coaching staff clearly has zero confidence in Luke passing the ball.

Luke needs to learn to throw it away when it ain’t there … And also when it’s 5 seconds left … Sling. The. Dang. Ball.

I like Luke … He’s certainly our best option … But we’re watching him go through his growing pains right now … We’ll see how he comes out of it …

If Lunney stays, we will likely lose some knowledgeable fans. We've already lost most of the unknowledgeable fans. He is not good. Never has been.

I don't have anything really against Henry, he's been ok. But if Jim Leonhard is still on the staff next year, he needs to be the DC. You can let Henry save some face and make them co-DCs, but Leonhard needs to be the one in charge.
But . . .but . . . You're still here!

Are these following statements kinda accurate?

Bielema is a ball control coach that wants to control the game by wearing down the other teams defense and keep their offense off the field.

Lunney is an up tempo coach that wants to spread it around

If accurate, it seems to me that things are kinda at odds with each other. I though we looked good against Maryland bc it seems to be more of the former and less of the latter.

And who are you to decide who a fan is and not? Let’s use google to figure it out? Wth?

Just have to hope the growing pains for some of these young guys pays dividends in next few seasons.
I keep reminding myself that Quan Martin was routinely burned badly during his first couple years in the program and he turned into a pretty good football player. Hopefully some of our young guys can do the same. We are thin at most positions, and I just don't see our recruiting making any measurable gains. Hope I'm wrong about that.

I expected the regression of the D to an extent with our losses from last year. But our offense, I believe, has enough talent to win games like today. Yes, our line is not good, but it's on the coaches to put our offensive players in positions to succeed. When is the last time we threw a quick slant? FAU? Early season that was working really well. Biggest thing for me with Lunney is the sheer number of wasted plays that have absolutely no chance of being successful with our personnel. We routinely just give away downs with stupid throws behind the line of scrimmage to IW, predictable delayed handoffs 7 yards deep in the backfield, boneheaded false start penalties, you name it. Time for Lunney to go, maybe Oline coach as well, and if the D does not see some drastic improvement in the next 4 games against truly terrible offenses (worse than ours if you can believe that) Henry probably is not gonna be the answer for us. I'm not sure he was ready for the promotion, but I think there has been some slight improvement in the D; I guess these next four will tell the story.

That was a soul crusher.

Yes it was. But the Illini received a lesson today from their Neighbors To The North about winning -- and how to win. When Wisky got down they did not panic. Nor did they let the Illini get further ahead when they could have done so. Wisky then methodically played their way back into the game. And then -- when they had little time left and a long way to go down the field -- they just went ahead and did that. No excuses. Did the zebras help them? Maybe so, but bad calls are part of the game and you have to get past that if you want to win.

That's a lesson in how to win football games. When the Illini watch the game tape - they need to get past their frustration of losing and pay attention to what and how it all happened today.

Teams like Wisconsin have developed a poise over the years and a type of confidence that the Illini have yet to develop. The ability to close games is essential for any good and winning football team.

And this lesson also applies to the roundballers, too. The Illini have to have that ability to lock down leads late in games and also the ability to execute when there is little time on the clock when they've got to either have a bucket... or stop the opponent from scoring in final possessions. Like an Ayo.

Who is the 'Ayo-'type on the football team? Which guys can develop this kind of way to take over a game when you have to?

According to Merriam-Webster:

Fan noun (2)
1: an enthusiastic devotee (as of a sport or a performing art) usually as a spectator

2: an ardent admirer or enthusiast (as of a celebrity or a pursuit)
And further :

Fan is generally–and very likely correctly–believed to be a shortened form of fanatic. The origin of fanatic(which can be traced back to the Latin word fanum, meaning “sanctuary, temple”) is less often commented on. In English, fan made an early appearance in the late 17th century only to disappear for two centuries, resurfacing in the late 19th century. In this later period of use, it often referred to the devoted observers of, or participants in, a sport.
