Unlikely.Pretty good chance Brad would have left for Kansas too if that opportunity was ever presented to him.

Just a genuine question - If Brad is as good of a coach as so many on here think he is …
How come every time there’s a big opening he’s never mentioned ?
Especially before the newest extension …
I agree completely with statement one, above. No coach, alone, possesses everything needed for coaching excellence. A coach needs to supplement with specific strengths of assistants.Exactly right. No coach can be great at everything. We all have strengths and weaknesses.
Brad is really, really good at culture and talent evaluation. He’s not a good X-O coach like Kruger was. Hire someone to shore up those weaknesses. It shouldn’t be that hard.
I believe there are still plenty of US players who fit the bill.I think you have to look at Brad's extension. No conversations will be had on either end. He's got a lifetime contract. Move on to what could happen(and I think should).....the Euro experiment needs to be toned down a LOT. It's great to have the skill, but the lack of having some true athletes is frustrating. That is a discussion that has to happen. Not sure if it's a lack of sufficient NIL money issue?
He said top 10 coach.Okay? But they were all ahead of Illinois on the list. Look back at my post, we were NINTH.
We only need to be top 10, since this was the comment everyone was crucifying:
Here’s the rest of the list after Illinois:
1. Houston: 86.6%
2. Duke: 79.7%
3. Arizona: 78.4%
4. UCONN: 78.3%
5. Purdue: 76.4%
6. Alabama: 72.7%
7. Tennessee: 72.7%
8. Kansas: 72.5%
9. Illinois: 70.3%
….
10. UCLA: 69.3%
11. North Carolina: 69.1%
12. Baylor: 69.0%
13. Auburn: 68.7%
14. Virginia: 68.2%
15. Florida: 68.2%
Take this however you’d wish. All of the teams after us:
have had at least one TRAINWRECK season in that 7-year timespan (so much so that some have even fired their coach).
but yes, have made a F4 (other than Virginia). I’m certainly not blaming folks for craving more March success. It’s just there’s a logical limit.
I, personally, would much rather hang my hat on consistency. If you keep knocking on the door with high seeds — year after year — it’s more significantly more likely than not your time will come.
Chris Beard really struggled this year. Howevere, his team was playing well in the SEC tournament.Chris Beard, Will Wade
Also a step down on that list were Nate Oats and the guy who ended up getting the job lol. That article is from National Media Tycoon....
Peoria Journal Star.
In the article, it also says Underwood is a step down from the elite 12 options they name... Lloyd, Drew, among others..
You do realize the Peoria Journal Star article was quoting two different USA Today articles and UK sports blog, right? So a local media outlet trying to sell copies couldn't even say the instate coach was a realistic option for Kentucky....

Such an unfair thing to say. Some people wear their emotions on their sleeve. Others are reserved. Doesn’t mean they are any less passionate or hard working.Just feels like we traded all our dawgs for “skill” players… I’d trade two seed lines for some dudes who leave it all on the floor every night.

Was talking about defense. We are better, but it still is the main reason for most (could be argued all) or our losses to date. The offseason moves havent translated to much in the way of wins? Illinois already has more wins than last year with more games yet to play… so far this year is better than last year in every way (while playing a tougher schedule)
1 second weekend in 7 years.Chris Beard really struggled this year. Howevere, his team was playing well in the SEC tournament.
So the people they quoted as a source were soo incredibly wrong that they didn't have Pope in the top 12....Also a step down on that list were Nate Oats and the guy who ended up getting the job lol.

Lou had a F4 not sure Brad will ever get that or he has better hair at this point of his life. Brad is looking pretty thin up top these days. There is no way we are firing a coach who just went 15-5 in conference and has gone to 6 straight NCAA's (would have been 7 but for Covid). He is what he is - he's a good recruiter and knows how to find talent. He can use that talent to consistently finish in the top 3rd of the Big 10 and make the tourney every year. But he is below average when it comes to actual coaching - developing game plans and managing the game. And that limits our ceiling; a great year gets us to the Elite 8 and a normal year has us going out in the Round of 32. He is Lou Henson with better hair
I don't think he leaves and I'm okay with winning 20 games a year until he hangs it up.Brad. Cannot. Leave. For. Another. Job.
He can't. It's built into his extension.
Feel free the copy/paste my post in any email you send. Squash it.
Sure, but I think it’s a pretty fair assessment that this team lacks toughness. 0-3 in OT games this year. Proof is in the pudding.Such an unfair thing to say. Some people wear their emotions on their sleeve. Others are reserved. Doesn’t mean they are any less passionate or hard working.
I would argue that Lou Henson took over a program which was in much worse shape than when Coach Underwood arrived on the scene. There were various reasons: the slush residue and the fact that the Chicago public league coaches were steering their players away from Champaign. That is one reason why the late Jimmy Collins was so important as an assistant coach. Furthermore, after Harv Schnitt was fired Gene Bartow was here for one year and then fled to UCLA. I have not looked it up recently, I believe Bartow was something like 8-14 in his one season. Your comments are spot on.Indy, I am so where you are on this. We get those who say “well we can go back to the Groce years” yada yada on and on.
Here is were I see it. I have been a fan since Harv Schmidt. Brad did not nor ever will have built Illinois basketball. So all he is done is get us back to what 80% of where Lou had us? Lou Henson did that and he was sort of similar to Brad in that he did not win the big one and he for sure struggled in the tournament.
Now I could just say, but yes he did get the final four with our greatest team ever (and that is not even debatable to those who only knew the 05 team). That would not be my point. Even Lou had to go at some point (even though he face Deon’s atrocity and the crap the NCAA did to him - Brad has had none of that). We went after Kruger who was a tremendous coach. Then Self who should have been our Dean Smith.
In my opinion it has gone down in coach quality ever since then. Brad is leaps and bounds better than Weber or Groce, but he is not the coach that will take what Lou did for us to the next level.
Slam away, it is what I feel as a 60+ year fan. If we want to win it all we just have to wait until he does a “Lou” and retires. Thing is Brad is not Lou and he won’t do what is right for the school. I am afraid we are stuck until the time he decides he wants to leave?
This might be the most motivating reason to be happy with BU I have had presented to me? It’s just sad, and it is just my opinion and not based on any fact or anything, I just don’t think he will ever get us “there”. No question he is not getting fired, he will retire at Illinois “pretty much” on his own terms. You would think Kentucky ending up with mark pope, lville ending up with Pat Kelsey, and ohio state ending up with Diebler would be a lesson for everyone who thinks Illinois can just dial up whatever name they want.
Yet here we are. As always
Just feels like we traded all our dawgs for “skill” players… I’d trade two seed lines for some dudes who leave it all on the floor every night.
This and a problem is when our “best shooters” in an offense made to shoot 3s don’t shoot many, don’t make any, or don’t shoot any. Those 2 arent the problem. They arent taking as many. The issue is Tomi and Big Z. They are combining for about 15% from three since big ten play started. Yesterday they were right on their average. 2 for 10. They need to take half that number combined or less.
So Beard doesn’t get the same break many on here give Underwood in his first couple of years here?1 second weekend in 7 years.
Missed tournament 2/3 years at Ole Miss.
In his three years at Ole Miss has finished 10th, 6th, and 14th in the conference.
There's an element of randomness in single elimination tournaments. Sometimes bad teams get a little hot and go on a run, even with bad coaches. Kevin Keatts, who nobody thinks was a good coach, managed to get a team that he coached to a 10th place ACC finish (and an 11-seed) to the Final Four. He went 12-19 the following year and was fired.
Was talking about defense. We are better, but it still is the main reason for most (could be argued all) or our losses to date.
Crocker sure has not moved the needle a ton defensively. We are better, but it hasn't translated to much in the way of wins.
You mean what used to be called “Every Day Guys?” Where can we get some of those guys?Just feels like we traded all our dawgs for “skill” players… I’d trade two seed lines for some dudes who leave it all on the floor every night.
