There is another option of course. Underwood is required to take an Xs and Os whiz on his staff, and allow him to fulfill that role.

I think Underwood's problem is he is not a tactician. He can identify and land talent and that alone will win you a lot of games, but there have been many games where we've been obviously outcoached. I think the lack of tourney success is because he is not able to create a strong gameplan on unfamiliar opponents in the time allowed.

We don't adjust well, we often come out of the gates slow, I don't know if we have any set plays. We need someone that can bring that to the table, whether it be a new assistant or a new coach.

So I've definitely been pretty unhappy with how Brad handled the late game today and his overall in game coaching, but I think there's nuance here. I'm not advocating for a coaching change or to fire Brad. In fact I don't think we should do that unless we have someone lined up you just can't say no to. And Brad has proven he can build a program and recruit at a high level. Those are no small feats and he's been good at that.

Instead I would advocate for hiring strong X and O assistant or game coaches this offseason. If that coach is solely in charge of timeout management, OOB plays, and a couple set plays for late game situations, so be it.
I agree, just as the majority of the board was clamoring for last year. Yet BU chose to roll with Hamer still sitting first row. He's reaping what he sowed when it comes to last off season's coaching moves. I hardly hear anything about Krueger, who was a head coach the four years prior to coming here, and Crocker sure has not moved the needle a ton defensively. We are better, but it hasn't translated to much in the way of wins. We have the resources to be a lot better on the bench X & O wise than we have been the last two years.

I think that's more of just saying. Like, no matter the time and score - focus on the effort plays. I don't think he literally means all you have to do is get 1 rebound in the game.
I interpret this to mean that someone has to make a play in those key situations.

The offseason moves havent translated to much in the way of wins? Illinois already has more wins than last year with more games yet to play… so far this year is better than last year in every way (while playing a tougher schedule)

I’m interested to see if all this talk of the B1G struggles in the tournament is due to how B1G refs officiate holds water. In theory we should do very well in the tourney this season if this is indeed a thing.
I recognize the officiating issue. But officiating is not costing us these recent losses.

Is this even true?

Where do fans actually think Underwood teams stack up talent wise throughout the country?
There are a lot of fans, who think this team is great. I am not there. Now if this team goes on a run in the NCAA maybe we can have that conversation.

Is that going to happen when the younger Underwood is running the offense?

That article is from National Media Tycoon....

Peoria Journal Star.

In the article, it also says Underwood is a step down from the elite 12 options they name... Lloyd, Drew, among others...

So a local media outlet trying to sell copies couldn't even say the instate coach was a realistic option for Kentucky....

Pretty good chance Brad would have left for Kansas too if that opportunity was ever presented to him.
But Whitman wouldn't !!!! his diaper like Guenther did once Kansas started sniffing around.

We're gonna win the first game next week. We may win a second time next week; I sure hope so. We probably won't win during week two of the NCAA tournament, but there is a tiny chance of that happening. And then, most likely, it will be time to start rebuilding a roster/staff/culture that can win an actual, real-life, not metrics-based, but actual in-the-flesh and no-whining championship. Maybe a B1G championship. Maybe at B1G Tournament Championship. Maybe the championship that Coach Underwood has set his sights on: the NCAA Tournament (National) Championship.

I have a savage, visceral, bleeding hope that Underwood will find a way to win a championship that matters. Give him the money, hold his fat feet to the flames until he howls, and let the blockhead with the heart of a champion and the vocabulary of a John Deere-dependent corn farmer rip. If not year 9 of the Underwood era, then let's roll in year 10. And 11.

Vocabulary of a John Deere dependent corn farmer? What a stupid comment. You should be so lucky.

More wins than last year ain't saying much. Last year was a significant disappointment, as I am sure you'll agree.

With the important caveat that: Underwood had to replace virtually his entire roster last year. He did that, and incredibly managed to build a team of modest accomplishment and with exception, young talent. And as well, he built the foundation for this year's squad.

Still. Underwood is not meeting his self-stated expectations of championships. He's close, but he's gotta get 'er done.

Exactly right. No coach can be great at everything. We all have strengths and weaknesses.

Brad is really, really good at culture and talent evaluation. He’s not a good X-O coach like Kruger was. Hire someone to shore up those weaknesses. It shouldn’t be that hard.

Lucky how? Please lend a hand to the stupid, if you would. (Also, I think you've entirely mis-read the meaning of my post, but ... that's standard.)

Nepotism is a bad look when that is the case.

Given his K-State ties, that’s probably the one blue blood job he doesn’t take if offered but who knows. 🤷‍♂️

Just a genuine question - If Brad is as good of a coach as so many on here think he is …

How come every time there’s a big opening he’s never mentioned ?

Especially before the newest extension …
Didn’t you say Texas had Brad high on their list? I thought you also said when North Carolina was open they had him high on the list.
