Possession estimator gives 67 for this game vs 62 against WSU last year.

I was listening on the radio, but it didn't seem like a particularly fast paced game, particularly for a preseason exhibition matchup.

Uhhhhhhh, Mike LaTulip is a baller. He clearly doesn't have the size right now to play in the Big Ten, but that kid is 2 inches and 30 pounds away from being a solid contributor for anyone. He has a way more game in him than I was expecting and I was actually hoping to see him bring the ball up instead of Berardini down the stretch. I fully expect he becomes a fan favorite quickly.

The thing I was most excited about was the closest we let this game get was 12points for only a short period of time. It killed me how we would always keep the game close in previous years and then have to work a lot harder to close the game out. I loved seeing the fact that for a large majority of the game we were ahead by 20 and kept it that way finishing on a high note.
In addition I was glad to see that players that didn't get a lot of minutes through the game made them count. If we can keep everyone up and going there will be a lot of nice surprises this year in our depth and player development. |

I can't imagine Groce will be that happy with the game, but that's ok. There clearly are plenty of things to work on and that's what this will be used for.
The one thing I was looking for I didn't really see. That was someone who had made huge strides since last year. Actually, I guess I did. Henry was very active. If he can maintain the effort he will see a lot of time at the 4 and that will be a big plus. |

No, it wasn't. Part of that was the Lewis was pretty deliberate on offense. One interesting tidbit-last year against WSU, the Illini tallied 0 fast break points. This time around there were more than that, for sure.

Yeah, plenty to work on, and that's fine. Good energy and effort throughout though, and that's really all I wanted to see at this point.

Boxscore stats appear to be typical for a first game - all over the place. Glad to see as many scored as they did. Go Illini.

Disappointed with Egwu. All that progress he made will be for naught if he can't stay on the floor.

Groce pre the radio-
* Upbeat about how they started, how hard they played. * Like that McLaurin always plays with a motor. * Yesterday was the first day they worked against a zone defense in practice, wasn't surprised they didn't look great tonight when Lewis went zone. * Goal to have more assists than turnovers tonight, didn't quite get there. * Need to work on reducing the silly fouls. * Can't wait get the stats and get back to work in practice. |

I was impressed with LaTulip as well. He has a quick release (as he should). I also thought that Henry did a great job as well. Shaw though he didn't get very many minutes was active and 4 rebounds for the amount of time he was in. All in all it was a sloppy game and i am worried about point guard play. Abrams started well but did not finish well in my opinion. Team did what they were supposed to do. As a side note, I liked that Coach talked to each player as they came off. Communicating with each one. This is something I like to see from a coach and it has been missing. I think its these moments that players learn from coaches. Groce seems to get it, putting his arms around the player and teaching.

This year will be a great test of Groce's true coaching ability. Seeing how he coaches around the weaknesses on this team, and how well they improve throughout the year will show a hell of alot more than just winning when the "studs" get here. |

So for those of you who got to watch, I ask this:
How fast paced did we really play? Any players step out of their roles from last year? |

Free throws, UGGH!! I like that we went 22 times to the stripe, but man you cannot miss free wide open shots.
