I doubt it, but it is still a work in progress so we can wait and see.

Re: Memorial Stadium Renovation Photos
With the stadium renovation proceeding, have there been any comparisons, favorable or otherwise, to the marvelous, $110 Million facelift given Camp Randall Stadium in Madison? I believe that venu is one of the oldest in the country, older by maybe 15-20 years than Memorial Stadium. UW also has a crumbling stadium that it needs to restore or rebuild, dating back to the 20's, like Memorial Stadium. The University is considering more extensive updates than those underway in Champaign. The stadium sits on a classic site along the Lake Washington shoreline, with the east end open to the water. Some people arrive by boat for games. It's a great location, but the stadium is a disaster in terms of outmoded facilities, deterioration, too few bathroom and other amenities, and even safety, health, and environmental problems.
Anyway, I was just wondering what has been said about other renovations to Memorial Stadium and also if there are additional, more extensive long term plans? The renovations underway are significant, but, frankly, not comprehensive or particularly impressive in overall appearance. I'm not an architect, and I realize we are working withing the skeletan and under the constraints of a venerable historic structure, so there are limits to how far the University, its alums and donors can/want to go ultimately. |

Re: Memorial Stadium Renovation Photos
As far as I know, these renovations to Memorial Stadium are just the beginning in terms of the long term plans with the athletic campus. The horse shoe and Assembly Hall, though, will happen before they revisit the main structure of Memorial Stadium.

Re: Memorial Stadium Renovation Photos
The main structure will probably be around forever. Unless they want to drop another $300 mil on it.

Re: Memorial Stadium Renovation Photos
The structure will be there but there has to be a major modernization done to it. Much more than whats being down now, and thats only to the West side. The East really hasn't be touched that much.

Re: Memorial Stadium Renovation Photos
That IS an awesome picture.
I see what you mean, JP. I thought you guys were talking about rebuilding it or something. I guess I don't see much else they could do other than adding another tier of suites on the east side. The rest of the "structure" - including the exterior walls, collonnades, stair towers, etc. - pretty much defines the stadium as what it is. The only other thing they could do, besides more suites on the east side, is finish off the "bowl" in the south with a second tier of seats. But they probably couldn't do that because of the proximity of the street to the south. But that would be cool.

Re: Memorial Stadium Renovation Photos
I heard a statement from the guy in charge of this project, cant remember the link, that said their next decision would be about redoing the horseshoe with the possibility of a later 2nd tier addition, raising capacity to somewhere around 80,000

The structure, and outer skin, I'm sure, will remain. The interior spaces, systems, facilities, wiring, plumbing, etc. needs to be re-done, and my guess is there is a fair amount of crumbling cement, exposed rebar, and the like, that needs attention thoughout the old structure. I'm glad to learn that this is the initial step in a long term, extensive modernization plan for MS. I confess I haven't kept on the master plan for the athletic facilities. What's it called, "Imagine Illinois" or something like that? |

When/what are the actual plans for the south end zone? I'd rather see a double deck structure than the one pictured. |

Re: Memorial Stadium Renovation Photos
Just curious, Dan, but do you know if they are still on pace to have everything finished by the first home game of the 08 football season?
I've heard that the expected finish date for the IMPE renovations has been pushed back to Fall 08 now instead of Summer. __________________ C-U/UIUC Historian and Lover of all Things Illini |

Re: Memorial Stadium Renovation Photos
I was just in Champaign but only had time for a short drive through campus with my children. The Stadium renovation is so massive. The IMPE addition is looking good, but there's still obviously a long way to go. The new Business Teaching Center is impressive. What's the building directly east of the Morrow Plots? I believe it's an Ag bldg, also impressive. There is so much construction underway on campus.
