How do you catch a 100mph fastball with a broken thumb? Hopefully just a sprain.

There's no way he was coming out of the game at that point. You'd have had to haul him off on a stretcher to get him off the field. I'm sure he had plenty of adrenaline helping get him through that last batter, but once he got to the dugout and relaxed a bit it was evident he wasn't going to be able to grip a bat.

I'm sure yadi makes that throw in the 9th too, or maybe they don't run at all on him, but man that was a huge throw by cruz, I'm glad he was in the game.

Too many rules regarding HBP's. Sometimes it better for the players to police themselves instead of letting an umpire decide where the intent is.

White Sox fan here. I realize Hawk Harrelson is a love or hate type of guy, but I think he has it dead on with his opinion of players policing themselves.

I did not see the game Friday, but heard about it, and of course read it on here.

When teams often hit players, intentional or not, sometimes a message needs to be sent. If intentional, IMO of course you need to respond. If one team each hits a batter, THEN. an ump issues a warning and you get back to playing baseball.

When a team has a habit of hitting batters (on the not intentional part), a message still needs to be sent. A pitcher needs to be in control. If he has no fear, no worry, no consequences when he repeatedly hits other batters, then the batters will get "upset," and that is when fights happen. If a pitcher on the other team hits one of his teammates, the message is sent to " be careful," to,put it nicely.

Players in the old days accepted it. In fact, I have seen many quotes of old time guys who say at least do what happened to Rizzo. Hit me in the rear where no damage happens. Then I will tell my pitcher to watch his chit. :D cuz I'm tired of getting hit.

Keep in mind, none of this is of the head hunting variety. Hit a guy in the rear, maybe the ribs, and move on.

I agree with this. The rules put in place give, in this case, Maddon and Rizzo a forum to act like upstanding men to media talking about vigilante justice. Well, they looked like idiots when the very next day they hit Wong twice in the "be careful area" and Garcia on the wrist(the Garcia one I fully believe was no intent), but when no retaliation is sent, you look like fools.

The Cardinals have been in games like this, obviously, they sent the message and moved on.

Cardinal announcers (former players)make the same comments. Let the players decide it, not the umpires.

OK, I was hoping for single digits in the magic number by this morning. It stands at 10 with 13 left to play. I am looking for 5 wins in the next 7 games against the Reds and Brewers, have to beat up on the bottom of the division. Then we can finish it up early next week against the Pirates. Thoughts?

If the Cards only go 7-6 in their remaining games, Pirates would still have to win 11 of 13 just to tie them.

Yes, but I would like to be able to set the rotation. I guess with the first game likely on Wednesday, there would be time to set it.

Also, I would rather rest a couple of position players who seem to need a little rest. Let the bench bats get a chance to get more at bats prior to the playoffs.

Who wouldn't? Hope they can.

Greeeaaaattt. The way our luck runs, it's going to take longer than hoping.

Molina has "slight ligament tear" in left thumb, Mozeliak says. Wainwright cleared for baseball activity. Will try to be reliever #cardinals

"Not that definitive that he's going to miss a lot of time," Matheny on Molina, who will be given time to heal, revisit after 5-7 days.

I'm guessing he plays, but not at 100%. His bat will probably be non existent, but the most important thing is that he's behind the plate.

Nice to see that we still can't hit young pitchers who get destroyed by the rest of the league. I was afraid that streak was in jeopardy... apparently I was worried for nothing

Matheny's decision making makes you scratch your head. You pinch hit Holliday in a key situation. He hasn't been hitting, either AB's or hits. How about Garcia?

That game went from being frustrating to enjoyable quickly.

Who knows what lurks in the mind of Matheny?

Tomorrow's starter for the reds has an era over 7 so I suspect a low output from our offense yet again.

#794
I guess those big ERA numbers intimidate the Cardinal hitters.

I guess in the "Cardinal book" that maddon claims we wrote, they forgot to include the section where it explained how e.r.a. is like a golf score... lol

I get where you are coming from but I want to pose another way to view this..

These young pitchers know that they are pitching against the Cardinals, who have the best record in baseball. They know that they can make a statement to the front office personal if they get a statement like win by beating the Cardinals. Not saying that the pitchers don't prepare for their other starts but that they take a little extra time in preparation against the Cardinals.

I think if I'm a young pitcher coming up, I put 100% effort into every game. I don't think I'd have any extra to give. Kind of like the Lovie Smith deal, I don't want to see you slow down and I don't want to see you speed up, because if you speed up, then you could have been going that fast in the first place.

The Reds brought in a lefty to pitch to Adams, so Matheny went with Holliday. It's a pretty straight forward decision.

It won't happen, but Mabry needs to be replaced at the end of the year.

It's been a problem for several years.

Bud norris, anyone?
