"This, um, savior comes to Illinois with an NFL coaching record of 89-87, about as mediocre as it gets. After coaching the Bears to the Super Bowl in 2006, Smith has gone 60-68, which is worse, but when you’re coming off Tim Beckman’s clown act, I guess mediocrity and condescension is considered a step up in Champaign. Same goes for availability, apparently. Smith lands in Champaign after being fired from his last two NFL jobs."

"This, um, savior comes to USC with an NFL coaching record of 33-31, about as mediocre as it gets. After coaching the Patriots to an AFC East title in 1997, Carroll has gone 17-15, which is worse, but when you’re coming off Paul Hackett’s clown act, I guess mediocrity and condescension is considered a step up in University Park. Same goes for availability, apparently. Carroll lands in Los Angeles after being fired from his last two NFL jobs."

"This, um, savior comes to UCLA with an NFL coaching record of 31-33, about as mediocre as it gets. After coaching the Falcons to an NFC West title in 2004, Mora has gone 20-28, which is worse, but when you’re coming off Rick Neuheisel’s clown act, I guess mediocrity and condescension is considered a step up in Westwood. Same goes for availability, apparently. Mora lands in Los Angeles after being fired from his last two NFL jobs."

Very well done

People on this board need to relax on the Chicago media. We deserve a lot of the negative press we've gotten the last several years.

We most certainly do, and it has been delivered often by many outstanding journalists and opinion leaders in the Chicago marketplace.

On the other hand, there is David Kaplan, Dan Bernstein, Steve Rosenbloom, Teddy Greenstein, and David Haugh. That, for me, is the Mount Rushmore of terrible Chicago sports personalities.

Re: the Chicago media: I thought the Mully and Handly show on 670 this morning was quite positive about the both Whitman and the Lovie Smith hire this morning.

Can you add Marc Silverman to that list?

I don't mind Bernstein on the NFL, NBA, but yeah his opinions of Illinois are consistently silly.

He sound like him even more... Especially when he is speaking Illini. I keep thinking he's going to say one of Don Drapers best lines that gets everyone fired like "We Will Win" or something like that.

And of course you know Draper's real name, right? :D

Old Illini narrative used by some people-"We're too cheap and won't spend the money to attract a good coach".

R.I.P. to that narrative once and for all. :thumb:

Probably the best part of all of this. :thumb:

Quite the crowd, along with the local news stations. I don't think I can post images straight from my phone

Yeah, a lot of it is idiotic, but they're in the business of hot takes. Illinois is an easy target for hot takes because we lose, and they get watched, listened to, and read.

Win and the hot takes go away.

BTW, the Whitman interview on TheScore is fair and good. They're still reaching a bit to find a few little negatives, but Whitman is just sooooo good.

A buddy from New Orleans, a big LSU fan, just reached out to me: "Looks like you guys finally hired a real coach."

Given the state of our program, this is an excellent hire. Lovie has his faults but he is a strong coaching upgrade, with name recognition that will give us some PR boost, and with strong ties to Midwest and Florida, which hopefully will result in recruiting wins and upgrade in talent.

Nice summary. Exactly right

An earlier post inquired re Ron Turner's reaction to the hiring:

"Lovie will do a great job. First, he's a really good person. The players will react to Lovie very well because he'll treat them right and with respect. Lovie is very smart and a very good football coach. He'll be terrific for the Fighting Illini community. His familiarity with the state of Illinois and his name recognition, especially in Chicago, will create excitement with Illini fans and certainly be helpful in recruiting."

Did we just become a Football School?

Welcome aboard Lovie Smith. What a great hire. That man can coach and will attract a good coaching staff and good recruits year in and year out.

"Hey recruit, want to play in the NFL? I know what it takes to succeed at that level.."
