What do you all think of the trade scenario that was put on ESPN where the Cubs trade for Chris Sale?

*Phew* What an anxiety-ridden game to watch as a fan. Fortunately this was carried away by some late offense and capped with Chapman's debut.

Hammel looked great and the Javy bomb was a thing of beauty.

Didn't see anything on ESPN's site. So I don't know without specific players involved.

Obviously Sale would be a player pretty much any team would love to get, Cubs included. I would assume the Sox would be asking for at least two young Major League ready players, plus multiple prospects on top of that.

So something like Baez, Almora, a AA player and a couple A players maybe. Would give the Sox their starting CF, a starting MI and a few more prospects to boot. Not sure even that would be enough since at this point the Sox are not under any particular pressure to sell Sale now, with unbelievably cheap team options through 2019. If they don't get blown away by an offer for him, hold on to him, try to rebuild with him again next year, and if that doesn't work, trade him a year from now.

At the risk of sounding like a really horrible person, the domestic violence incident didn't even enter my mind as Chapman hit 103 on the gun last night.

That first at bat where he threw three straight at 100+ and then switched up to a 91 mph slider was utterly filthy. The Sox batter (can't remember who it was) swung so hard at the off speed pitch, he nearly fell out of his shoes.

My only thought was, "I cannot believe this freak of nature is on MY team!"

So, yeah, I'm going to Hell, but that was freaking fun.

of course I wish he didn't have that in his past, but I can forgive and forget if he truly is committed to stopping that behavior and works to prove it.

Odds are, we only have the guy for the rest of the year. If we do re-sign him, he needs to do some off season community service and show it to the fans he's sorry

Looking forward to watching a save situation as a Cubs fan has me so confused. Very unfamiliar territory.

Which is interesting because they just sent one down to AAA: La Stella.

I know he had a big hit today but I don't understand the Coghlan love at all.

Coghlan .155/.248/.278 (194 AB)

La Stella .295/.388/.457 in a pretty good sample size (105 AB).

Coghlan had two really nice years for the Cubs prior to this one and after his day today lifted his OPS since rejoining the Cubs to a relatively respectable .669. For whatever reason, he really sucked at Oakland for the first part of this year.

LaStella has options Coghlan doesn't, and neither does Szczur, and you can't keep a healthy player on the DL. So it was release Coghlan, release Szczur, or demote LaStella. I guess this was the least bad option. LaStella was having a hard time getting at bats with Baez playing so well anyway.

The Cubs have a bit of an embarrassment of riches with regards to depth. Arguably, they have three players who should be in the Major Leagues at AAA right now between Almora, LaStella and Matusz, and also have Cahill and Soler on the DL, not too far from returning.

The Cubs are going to try to keep as many assets as possible for as long as possible until trades or injuries sort things out. However, chances are they're going to be forced to DFA a pretty good player before the rosters expand in September. I'd bet my house that LaStella won't be the player released.

Agreed. Options is the only reason LaStella was sent down. Things may end up slightly more clear after Monday.

Needing a palate cleanser after yesterday's disappointment of a ball game, today's trade deadline has been quite entertaining.

-Jonathan Lucroy to Cleveland, then vetoes the deal.
-Andrew Miller to Cleveland.
-Zach Duke to St. Louis.
-Tyler Clippard to NYY.

Any Cubs' moves on the horizon?

And don't forget to follow Brett @ Bleacher Nation today as he does his annual trade deadline blogathon to raise money for Make-A-Wish. This year he's going 39 hours straight and has raised over $17,000. Info here: http://www.bleachernation.com/2016/07/31/wake-up-the-2016-trade-deadline-bnblogathon-is-here/

Trade deadline is tomorrow. They moved it one day because the 31st fell on a Sunday. First time they've ever done that, I think.

How about Sonny Gray as a bit of a reclamation project? He had two good years prior to this one, is young and controlled until 2020. Not sure what it would take to get him but the Cubs and A's have a history as a trading partner.

Gray would be a great fit, especially with the Arrieta contract looming, but reports are he's most likely not leaving Oakland because his present value is so low. Though with the SP market so thin, he'd probably bring back a quality return.
