This would be a lot more surprising than Goodwin spurning Groce & Co. Tilmon has a lot of verbiage published about elevating the program at C-U, being excited about playing for the O&B, etc. It is possible that he feels awkward and maybe even a little embarrassed about Goodwin, and we're seeing a relative period of quiet from him.

If the radio silence is even real.

I hear a lot about "we need a 1" or "2" but this classical approach to basketball is disappearing. The top 3 "1s" are Irving, Curry and Paul and all of them would have been viewed as "2s" in the past because they are prolific scorers. The tallest player on Team USA is most likely Durant but he plays "3" and often is a "2". To me basketball has switched to a game of match-ups. See what Cleveland did to Steph Curry on switches in the finals, and think of Tristan Thompson guarding point guards.

For me what our team needs is 10 guys who have the size and quickness to defend multiple positions, who can pass, shoot, drive and have the intelligence and integrity to make good decisions on and off the court. Not so much 1s, 2s and 3s...

That being said a 7'-0" rim protector goes against everything I said, but I'd still like one on the team.
Bingo, versatility is the name of the game

I think it's pretty disrespectable to wonder if Tilmon still wants to come here just because his friend didn't. He easily could've waited to see what Goodwin decided before committing.

Same one that told me about Goodwin last weekend.

I'm not saying it will happen or is even likely, but wouldn't it be interesting if Illini basketball had a huge start to the season and another great recruit commit, and Goodwin flipped our way just before signing day? Probably would only happen if his AAU coach got picked up as an assistant for the Illini with an offer he couldn't refuse.

Not completely true. Curry, Irving, and Paul all have excellent court vision and the ability to create for others, which are the essential qualities for a PG. The fact that they can light it up also makes them superstars. You can't take any talented SG and plug them into the PG position and be successful. Most players either have vision or they don't (sort of like good hands for a big). It's few and far between the players that can develop this quality all of a sudden at age 20.

You'd think we would have learned our lesson over the last decade with trying to convert SGs into PGs. Most of the time this doesn't work.

Having said that, I think DMW, though labeled as a combo guard, has much more potential to play PG than JCL. Coleman-Lands is about as pure of a SG is there is out there. After a year of watching him (plus all his H.S. videos), I've never once seen him get into the lane and create. OTOH, Da'Monte has that ability to get in the lane and make things happen.

Just to play devil's advocate here, what if his commitment was solid at the time but also contingent upon Goodwin? Personally I don't think the Goodwin thing hurts us in a vacuum, but if they've all talked about playing together could this be a thing?

As an Illini fan, I am going to go out on a limb and say we might not ever be on the 'good news' side of a NLOI day surprise.

No way does Tilmon play for SLU so why wouldn't he stick with the Illini? Goodwin messed up the plans not Tilmon and clearly Tilmon thought Goodwin was coming to UofI

I'm not saying he goes to SLU, maybe just reopens his recruitment. It's obviously nothing any of us fans want. But it's his decision. Maybe Kansas and unc don't look so bad now.

I have thought of this scenario as well. Maybe one of the promises Groce told Tilmon was that "he would get Goodwin" as well. Then when Goodwin pulls this stuff, Tilmon feels betrayed. It would explain why Groce "punched a wall". (If it really happened...things tend to get exaggerated from person to person) It might also explain why Groce desperately wanted Goodwin (it would seem) when it isn't a position of need. Maybe he also really wanted Illinois kids to be the core of our resurgence.

I hope it didn't happen like that. And I hope ILLOB is simply seeing stuff on a scout board relaying it here.

If I remember correctly, Stu was the first one to drop the vague "things are not at all what they seem" about Goodwin and he has also been plugged into the Tilmon recruitment. If Stu comes on here and starts talking about it...we should feel some concern.

I agree that DMW has plenty of potential to become a pg. but I disagree about jcl not getting in the lane and creating. He did that multiple times last year and made great passes doing so. He has the vision and the passing, he's lacking more the ball handling side.

Would sense there's been enough spin, hypotheticals, and paranoia conjectured that we can move forward knowing that we know JT is an Illini to stay. :deadhorse:

Would that be a silent de-verbal?
Please don't speak of such things... "Everything is fine. Good night." Those memories are too recent but this is a very different scenario.
