No idea what kind of numbers we are talking about as it concerns Tilmons and SLU. But with Tilmon not necessarily being a one and done type recruit, doesn't the short term gains get negated somewhat by the long term gains? Does taking a chance on playing at SLU against lesser competition and not developing to the extent that he would at a P5 school, and therefore possibly impacting your draft status make that a gamble not worth taking? Surely the difference between being a 1st round pick and a 2nd would more then make up whatever it is being realized for a year or more at SLU? Heck, I'd think even a few spots difference would negate that. But what do I know? :noidea:

Does any other programs have decommits this close to signing day? Gordon , Snider maybe Tilmon although we don't know if he has decommited or weighing options or whatever it is. Look at the first two Gordon and Snider and where did their programs end up but on probation. This is such a dirty business anymore in so many places. I think if Tilmon indeed does decommit this is by far worse than the Gordon situation being an Illinois kid. Everyone has the right to change their mind but the day before the signing period after you have appeared to bleed orange and blue since July. A lot of these 5 stars want to be the man well stand up and act like one. I know right now this is all speculation and maybe he will sign with Illinois but just feels so dirty the way its going down.

Did something change just recently?

Because I follow Tilmon on Snapchat and ever since he committed he has always made sure to rep the Illini. Always pointing out his Illini gear when he has it on and he even talked a little trash to a kid with a Michigan shirt on once. Plus, he has been back on campus multiple weekends since committing. It truly looked like he was making sure everyone knows he is an Illini.

Hmmm I wonder what could make a teenager change his mind so quick? We can only $peculate.

It's actually pretty simple, if JT is not with UI and for UI, JG and staff needs to move on to the next best player in line that fits in. Best recent example: Trent Frazier.

Easier said than done. We are pretty late in the cycle for '17.

I tried to warn people yesterday before any of this came out and I got bashed for it. Not all bad news is false news. Still hoping he stays.

The thing that is so darn frustrating with the whole situation is that Tilmon should've done this months ago. Doing it during signing period absolutely screws the UofI and prevents them from being able to recover and find another Center. I'm pretty sure Groce & co. have continued to recruit Tilmon pretty fervently.

I am not off the Tilmon train just yet and don't think everyone else should freak out until Tilmon or somebody credible states "he is out." Tilmon's EStl HS coach saying he is going to U of I is also something to hold onto.

My opinion is that Tilmon will be in the O&B and is looking for some extra attention with his recruitment.

If all is true regarding a JT defection, then JG and staff will find a player with the right attitude no matter how long it takes. Unfortunate about JT if it's true since it'll be hard to find a suitable substitute, but again, the best recent example with the right attitude about UI is: Trent Frazier. It's not the end of Illini basketball or John Groce.

Well, stuemke5, might as well give it to us straight.

Nothing more to add that hasn't been said on the board. Not signing, my source has gotten quiet just like before Goodwin fiasco. Think I'm gonna take a step back for a while! Going to root for the team on the floor, whomever that happens to include and quit worrying about the rest. Too many highs and lows for me!

If this goes down Whitman needs to either decide Illinois is bringing bags of cash or really get to the bottom of this and take SLU down. Tired of just sitting by and watching. Either need to join the muck or out the cheaters.

Good luck.

I'm not giving up on Timon yet, but if he does indeed choose to go elsewhere, Illinois needs to start learning to play the game. As much as I hate saying it, everyone else is playing the game. We need to play it too

Suggest staying clean, you will never regret it.

Honestly think this might be a blessing in disguise. I didn't like the amount of extra slack Groce was getting just for signing Tilmon. I really want his future as our coach riding way more on the team's success this year.
I don't think anyone was discounting the importance of this season on Groce's future, but if he were successful this year and followed it up with an average/below-average recruiting class, the state of the program would not be good.

Everyone expects the team to be good this year. We have a combined roster experience of over 9000 years (or at least that's what it seems like...). The hard part is going to be following that up, when we go from a really old team to a really young team. Tilmon is a key piece in that being possible.

Because we've seen this movie before and know how it ends.

Sure looks that way. Saying you're not signing at this point is a pretty strong statement. Also confirms the worst fears about what's been happening in the background.

If it happens, this would look a lot more like a make-or-break season for Groce.

LIVE Signing Day blog: Five-star Preston will sign early

Late Tuesday night, Illinois committed five-star center Jeremiah Tilmon confirmed a report by Bret Beherns of WCIA Television in Champaign, Ill. that he will not be signing early.

"I won't sign tomorrow," Tilmon told Rivals.com. "I'm just waiting for a later period to do it."

A center who moved back to his home school of East Saint Louis (Ill.) High for his senior year after time at La Porte (Ind.) La Lumiere, committed to Illinois in July.

Earlier this fall, there were rumors that Tilmon's commitment could be shaky but sources close to him all confirmed that things were fine.

Though Tilmon hasn't de-committed, it is clear that his commitment could be shaky and him backing away from the Illini would be a huge hit to their 2017 recruiting class that currently ranks No. 8 overall.

Glad to hear we at least have a letter from Da'monte! That's a big pick-up, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise! :D

Not signing is completely reasonable these days if a player is concerned about coaching changes or job security or just wants to make sure that something drastic doesn't happen after the player commits. However, it would make me feel much better to hear Tilmon say that rather than these blank statements that he just isn't signing and he's waiting. He could easily come out and say, "Hey- I'm waiting because I want to make sure nothing changes with Illinois but I'm still an Illini guy." He hasn't done that and that is what really concerns me.
Maybe he is staying loyal and just making sure that the rug doesn't get pulled out from under him. I would be shocked if a player had so little respect and loyalty after all these years of recruiting him that he would pull the rug out from under Groce at the last minute.
Maybe Groce knew this was happening all along...
I'm trying to find silver linings here. The last 12-24 hours of news have not brought me a lot of hope.

The blue bloods cheat! The mid-majors cheat! Everybody cheats but us!

I'm really discouraged at how dirty the whole college basketball scene is and the complete and utter lack of loyalty that anyone has to one another. Coaches, players, schools...
