Where God lost his shoes
I know it is not a popular opinion, but Coach Groce is not a big time head coach. He seems like a great guy and adequate recruiter. But he can't seem to teach defensive fundamentals, coach in game situations or figure out substitution patterns. I will duck and take the push back, but we have watched the same stuff for several years now and I, for one, don't see any improvement in his approach.

Now, if he were willing to make a change to his staff and bring in a more effective game coach as his right hand assistant, perhaps he could keep his job. Right now, it ain't working. It was obvious from the first game, when I posted "Meh...again" that this team suffers from the same flaws as the last three.

John Groce needs to go, done with him. Every single year you get mediocre results from a mediocre head coach. This is Illinois, how can you continue to defend this?

Overeacting much? It's one game. If this continues I may agree with you, but don't act like the season is lost.

9-16 from the free throw line won't get it done.
22 turnovers can't happen either.

Wow. Finke and Morgan. Especially Morgan played terrible tonight. Groce should of went small to combat how bad our bigs were.

Hill was missing in action when we needed him again. Like last year. Great at times and then disappears.

Glad to see Black back though. And Tracy was a worrior out there.

Stay tuned re: the subject of the "entitlement" of Illinois fans. I've been doing a little research. Need the football regular season to end before I'm done.

Suffice it to say, the fact that anyone is even here to complain about it anymore lets you know that we are the hardiest most dedicated fans on planet earth.

I wanted to at least get to December before the "Fire Groce" chorus returned. Shall we talk about missed free throws and a total no-show by the bigs at all?

So you're saying the 'total no-show by the bigs' is NOT JG's fault ? Right ?
I mean, he IS the head coach ? Right... He does coach the bigs, along with the other players ? Right ?
Just curious....

Nope Groce recruited these guys. That's the excuse given. So Finke should of never been here nor should mav of been here. Never the players fault. The bigs couldn't make bunnys that left 12+ points off the board.

Overreacting? How many seasons do we need to be told countless excuses?

Wow....... I agree this may be the first date on the JG farewell tour......
But so funny seeing those bashing Tate on here. Was far from his fault,.

Man, Tate bottled that kid up for about 8 minutes, and we went up 10 points. Then he banks in a few desperation shots in the last 2 mins and the rest is history. That Johnson kid had more heart than our entire team.

Actually this is going to be the 4th year in a row Illinois has missed the tournament. So it's not just five games. How can you continue to defend this?

So we are going to miss the tournament? :tsk:
I still think we have a chance.

The first few years the excuses were it was Bruce Weber's recruits and the past few years it was injuries. This is a fully healthy Illinois team with John Groce's recruits. AND you got lucky with Abrams and Throne back for extra years and you still can't make the tourney? He has run out of excuses. I don't care if we lose every top recruit, you're just treading water keeping John Groce because he is a mediocre coach who is producing mediocre results.

I feel terrible for our Seniors. It looks like Malcolm and Co. will never get to taste a tourney. I just don't think we have it in us right now. :(

Everyone needs to relax. Winthrop made countless lucky shots down the stretch, and we ran into a kid who couldn't miss. Winthrop is not a bad team. Remember, Wisconsin lost to Western Illinois last season. At home. Plenty of time to turn it around.

It won't happen until we miss the tournament again in March, but Groce needs to be fired. His problem is that, in the end, he's just not a very good basketball coach. This loss simply cannot happen at Illinois. We are 4 years into this era, and we are losing to Winthrop at home. Malcolm Hill is going to fail to make the NCAA tournament a single time in his career. What a disgrace and waste. He deserves better.

We needed a pair or two of fresh legs the last four. JCL has to be in there. No excuses from coach on that one. Tate was tired from chasing Johnson around the whole game. Johnsons banked in 3(yuck)and acrobatic layup got the run started.

I saw a lot of me first ball tonight. Guys who won't look at each other even when giving daps.
