Lot's of chatter around Sale to the Nationals. Top 2 prospects Giolito and Robles would be centerpiece of package going back, along with some lower level prospects.

Thoughts?

I like the move, provided it's to get all the suitors heavily engaged. The Nationals talk means it's put up or shut up time. Surely, Hahn knows he's dealing from ultra strength. Top prize and no time pressure. Ante up, fellas.

Read an article yesterday, it seems potential Sale suiters are not willing to give up what the Sox want from them for Sale...Nats, Dodgers, Braves, Bosox to name 4. Whether it's because a) they don't feel Sale is worth the talent swap, or b) because they feel their current talent has a better upside, don't know.

I have a feeling we'll be seeing Sale back on the mound at the Cel (or upside-down-arrow park) next season...in a Sox uni...

Not sure excited is the word, but never thought I would be possibly looking forward to the Sox trading away a generational talent like Sale. I like Giolito, and Robles looks great but still a ways away, and you never know what can happen. I hope Hahn sticks to his demands. If he thinks he HAS to have Turner, than don't make the deal without him. IF going into this, they thought that Turner OR Giolito had to be in on the deal, then take it. If all of the prospects I saw listed in the deal are correct, the Sox do get a lot back. And of the 7 prospects I saw listed, I think 5 are close to MLB ready. Only ones a few years out are Robles (OF) and Kieboom(SS) That said I would still like to see what Boston can bring back. Still have my heart set on Benintendi on the south side.

It's a weird paradox trading Sale in that the combination of his talent, health and contract make him so valuable that the only teams that have enough talent to trade for him are already good enough to be challenging for a championship by virtue of that talent, and those teams are wary about giving up pieces that would be Major League contributors during the three years remaining on Sale's contract. In order for the Sale bidders to improve their playoff chances, they almost have to, by necessity, give the Sox less than full value for Sale. Otherwise, they're just treading water.

I think the rumored deal of Robles, Giolito plus one more prospect would be a disappointing return for Sale. The Phillies got two prospects of that value plus three starting pitchers and a couple more pieces for Hamels. (Granted, they also sent a relief pitcher roughly equivalent to Zach Putnam.) The Royals got the starting center fielder and second baseman for two World Series teams plus Jake Odorizzi, who was part of the trade that got them Wade Davis and Good James Shield for Zack Greinke. (Granted, they also gave up a middle infielder who is probably mid way in value between Lawrie and Saladino.)

Point is, there's pretty much no reason for Hahn to pull the trigger now if the reported return is what it is. He should pivot to discarding Lawrie, Frazier, Robertson, Cabrera, and anything else of value signed for fewer than three years while they're still under contract, and then try again with Sale and Quintana at the Deadline.

Spot on. If no team steps up, wait.

And therein lies the rub.

Moncada and Kopech are blue chip players. Waiting on the two other names Sox get .

Well I guess that's it. Seems like a fair enough deal. The Red Sox's 1, 5, 8, and 28 best prospects according to mlb.com. I'm just glad we have a direction. Hopefully Hahn sticks to it.

Far better deal than what the rumors of the Nats trade were. You've got your possible future Kris Bryant and possible future Noah Syndergaard plus two other nice prospects. Well done! Congrats.

I like it. Still have a baseball hard on for Benintendi, but oh well. Now go back to the Nats, Houston, ATL with Quintana. The market is set with Sale, everyone knows what they will need to pay for Q.

Agreed about the better deal. I was not happy with the rumored Nationals deal. This at least seems closer to fair.

:( I don't know, man. That's really it?

I like the centerpieces better than the Washington deal, but wish it could have had a little more after Kopech. Swihart would have been nice. Seemed like the market indicated the best pitcher in the league would command more. Especially knowing Dombrowski, who will go all in for superstars.

My reaction is mostly just sad. So long Sale, it was awesome to have you.

I agree. I still don't think the trade was totally fair. But then again, I dont think any team would have been willing to pony up what Sale was actually worth, given his contract. I don't know how much better we could have done.

If there was one dude who would have emptied out the cupboard, it's Dombrowski.

Frazier/LAD talks picking up now. Hold on to your butts.

I think the best they get for Frazier is Verdugo. I would be good with him at the center.

Speaking as a Cub fan who has no real rooting interest in the White Sox...

I like the move. Moncada and Kopech are good ones. Sale wasn't going to be here when the Sox became contenders.

Sale is cost controlled for 3 years: $39M. Sounds like a lot, but that's a table pounding bargain.

Radio just said the Red Sox are picking up the entire $30+ Million left on Moncada's contract.

That's amazing. So basically, you can add whomever your next free agent is to the White Sox side of the ledger when evaluating this trade.

That's significant, I guess. I'm not sure what difference that extra $$ makes at the very start of a rebuild.
