I was actually quite warming up to the idea of Prohm (obviously not knowing we could get Underwood). Wonder if he might have been next on the list to reach out to, or close to it? Would have still checked a lot of boxes.

Interesting I see his salary listed at $1.5 million on Wikipedia. Are Big 12 schools not named Kansas that cheap when it comes to basketball?

Shaka Smart signed an extension through 2023 worth $3 million a year.

The whole issue with the Big XII these days has been Texas hogging all the TV money with their Longhorn Network stuff. So that could play a factor in the other salaries.

Seems like next on the list was Bryce Drew. But Drew, Underwood and Prohm are all pretty similar resumes. I think we got the best of the three.

I was right that we hired someone who had been discussed on the Coaching Search thread, but alas I wish we'd have discussed him beyond "It's his first year and he's a perfect fit at OSU, we missed our window". Of course, the fact that T. Boone didn't manage to pay up is pretty strange.

Indiana is never going to find a coach they like because their expectations are unrealistic. The best #hottake I've seen on the matter was some tweet comparing Indiana's basketball program with Nebraska's football program in terms of current stature compared to what they used to be.

You think Indiana fans have more unrealistic expectation than Illini fans?

Ugh. Tony Bennett is the best college basketball coach under whatever age Bill Self is. You people are ridiculous.

But in that Archie/Marshall group, Underwood would have been an interesting one to place.

Nowhere did I say Bennett wasn't a good coach. When it was announced we were gonna make a run I was stoked.

They were 8th in the nation in offensive efficiency last year.

So what? This year they ranked 88th nationally. More importantly, they rank 309th out of 351 schools in scoring at 66.1 points per game. Last year they were better offensively, but they still ranked 209th nationally at 71 points per game. The year before they were ranked 211th at 65.4 points per game. So they're a top 300 offense, except when they're not.

They could pay him beans...?

You need to be roasted.

Please filter these comments. ;):D

He could press on defense and grind it out on offense. And of course all of the players would have specially designed cups...:coffee:

That's not remotely more important. That's in fact so unimportant as to be irrelevant.

And they were 50th this year per KenPom which adjusts for the strength of the teams they played. Not good, but respectable.

Characterizing Virginia as an all defense no offense team is patently, laughably false. That's 1995's level of basketball analysis talking.

Seems like it.

IU has been a sleeping Storied Program for so long that the memory of them being great seems to have faded. Look at CBS' set decoration backdrop for the Final Four. The Blueblood banners - UCLA, KU, KY, NC, Duke and ... Louisville are what is shown.

Historically IU would have been the one up there with those other 5.

Meanwhile, IU fans themselves still think they're one winning season away from permanent glory again. Never mind that they're not even the third best program in their own state any more (Purdue, Notre Dame, Butler)

The state's flagship school has not won an NCAA in 30 years now, the fanbase is still rabidly loyal to the angry old man who won't return to campus, and no coach or season they've had since Knight was shoved out by Brand has really come close, except that one Mike Davis fluke season in 2002 or so.

Meanwhile the fanbase is still certain they're a blueblood. I got "Told" by an IU supporter that our coaching search did not matter to IU because "nobody Illinois would hire is on the IU radar."

Just one example. :D

First, I didn't say that. I said context matters, and it does. Second, I won't apologize for believing in my team and giving the coach a chance to finish the season before calling for his head. Third, this has nothing to do with Tony Bennet.

But you're ignoring context by saying his offense isn't good based on PPG. They have a low PPG due to the playing an extremely slow tempo and strength of schedule. When you control for those things he had the 50th most efficient offense this year and the 8th most efficient last year.

Right. Context matters.
