Coaching Carousel

Have to feel for Boynton in this too. You finally get your shot to be a HC and your AD is openly mocked for hiring you. Can't fill you with confidence.

Coaches are confident people. Take that big chance any way you can get it.

I wish them luck, they're gonna need it.

One wonders if Gottlieb said "thanks but no thanks"

You're welcome. Sorry, I didn't define it very well. The list refers to number of NCAA tourney appearances, NCAA tourney wins, and NCAA tourney losses.

conference tourneys do not factor into the list, and I don't think it's as relevant to blue blood status since so many of them didn't have tourneys until the last 10-20 years.

OK that makes sense, I should have recognized our 40-31 record.

Since it's been what we're stuck on for so long now.

He came out earlier today and said they called and told him he was no longer under consideration.

Not sure how Holder keeps his job much longer. Gundy isn't a fan either.

Here's a better snapshot of tourney history from the top of the heap...I have a spreadsheet that I maintain.

Great look. Really captures recent history. I tend to think of blue blood as long-term, so even going back 50 years you'll have a subset of fans that remember that far back.

With 5 titles, and a fan base that is still really passionate, I'm not sure how you exclude Indiana. They're titles might be kinda stale, but not everyone who watched in '87 is completely dead yet.

I'm pretty sure the fans are about to jump out of their skin over in Stillwater, over this announcement.

Their podunk site finally loaded for me, and sure enough, meltdown.

The Cowboy faithful doesn't seem too pleased for some reason with this hire.

I thought it could really make sense - Boynton was with Underwood for the past four years, he's had to be partly involved in the achievement. Sure it's an assistant, but unless you had a big name teed up and were willing to pay for him -- and if you were willing to pay, you wouldn't have lost Underwood -- promoting a top assistant seems like the next choice to make. It could pay off for them if he can X and O coach at all.

It's not. This is a Cubit Extension moment for them. These are people who get laughed at by OU fans 24/7/365. Have some solidarity. Fans deserve for schools to be as committed to success as they are.

But coaches do too, and that's why we have Underwood.

I wish they would have hired Gottlieb so we could have a data point on failed former players with no coaching experience failing.

I agree. This goes back a page further, to 1957. Much more success for Indiana. Not as much for Illinois, speaking of dark days.

And look at that string for UCLA, eh?

What in the world are the Cal Bears doing? Between them and OK State I wonder if some ADs are pushing back against the carousel and skyrocketing salaries?

Both of these schools are facing some serious financial difficulties. That said, you'd think T Boone could pony up a few more for OSU.

Bradley did make a S16 under Les. I wouldn't strike that as a HUGE failure for Bradley.

Talk to Bradley fans. You'll get about 95% who think FAIL. Les had 9 seasons and never finished better than 4th in the MVC. They will tell you the S16 was great but winning 2 games in March didn't overcome 9 seasons not competing for a MVC title.
