Coaching Carousel

I think they'll go for a bigger fish from a PR perspective, but they should absolutely consider hiring Groce. I think he'd do a great job at that level. He'd also be able to recruit second-tier Chicago kids as effectively as Archie has, IMO. Groce has a good rep in AAU circles from his time in Champaign - seen as a stand-up guy and hard worker.

Plus he's the same coaching tree and philosophy. Would represent continuity with their existing success and probably keep some staff. Yet a bigger name than elevating an assistant.

Good choice for IU and probably a good outcome for us too.

Saw someone on another board mention the possibility of Groce joining Archie's staff as associate HC/lead recruiter. That would be a horrific outcome. Glad that Groce is gone, but really don't want him on staff at IU or tOSU. I think he'll take a mid-major head coaching position, but you never know.

Archie is probably the best likely option for them, but I have to say that I'm not sure I would consider him an upgrade over Tim Creamer. I mean, Tommy looked really stupid out there, but he seemed to be a great coach. Archie has his work cut out for him to improve on his predecessor, especially when getting a contract like that.

Has a coach ever been fired, then immediately joined the staff of another team in that same conference? That seems crazy.

Yeah, that'd be bad.

Was just about to post this, that would seem like a pretty good fit to me. If Dayton decides to keep someone from Archie's staff as their new HC, might be an opening.

Word here at Indiana State finals says Archie/ 4M deal is confirmed. That's going over very well with the locals

Idk why but it's hard for me to see Groce not go back into a HC gig.

Totally satisfied with how it all turned out, but I wonder if Archie to IU was in the works for awhile and played into Whitman's last minute cancelled meeting with him last Saturday in Bloomington.

Been an interesting carousel this year that's for sure, made more so since we were involved. Archie at IU is a very good hire. Any Indiana fans disappointed by this are totally delusional.

I'm really surprised Pitino jr's name didn't get bandied about a little more with some of these jobs. He may have done well with the NC State job, or the Cal or Washington jobs, not that he would have taken them, necessarily. Seems like he didn't even get to use this year in order to get a raise, though.

Not that John Groce needs kicked around anymore, but I just realized how disheartening it would have been had IU went from Crean to Miller, Mizzou from Anderson to Martin, and we had stuck with ole JFG

Or, worse yet, fired him then replaced him with an assistant with zero head coaching experience no one has ever heard of. Poor OSU and Cal fans. Maybe it'll work out. Doesn't seem likely, though.

Crazy thing is I bet a large faction of that fan base is disappointed. I mean, when you set your bar at Billy Donovan and Brad Stephens...

Really good hire for them. Great for the Big 10. Game on, Hoosiers!

And yet, checking Btown Banners there is a vocal minority who are upset about getting Archie including Brass Cannon. BC, if you see this care to weigh in on why you are so livid and are done supporting Glass? Looks like a great hire from most people's perspective.

Clear to me that with Chris Collins, Gard, and Pikiell entering the league over the last few years and now Archie in the mix, Groce had to go. Just doesn't have the in-game chops to hang. Archie is going to be tough to recruit against. We'd better be able to recruit effectively in Chicago, because I think Indy and St Louis are going to be awfully tough given the new landscape (still think we'll do fine, but we were gaining ground in the Indianapolis area and I assume that's kaput now; STL we'll hang in there, but Cuonzo and Ford are going to get theirs).

I would be more concerned with Chicago than Indy honestly. Archie already has his hooks in Chicago and now he is at a much bigger program. It's not like UI has been pulling in many Indiana stars. Hard for it to make a difference in a state where you have had limited success.
