The reason I'm excited about Smith is not because of his RSCI ranking, nor because MSU, Kentucky and (conditionally?) Duke offered -- it's because he seems to be one of those rare guys that has enough athleticism, basektball IQ, scoring ability, playmaking ability and sheer size to make a difference in many roles, many spots on the floor, and in many situations. Hearing that BU's system has "interchangeable" players in the 1-4, it seems to me that having guys like Smith are EXACTLY what you want. He can pass it, he can handle it, he can score on jumpers, he can post up smaller guards (of which he will encounter a lot), and he can likely learn to defend a variety of guys with his size. He may not be spectacular at any one of those skills, and he may not be considered one of the Top 50 individual players by whatever metrics the evaluators use, but he sounds perfect for us.
People have joked about how Underwood's system is "perfect" for every player, and how every player will benefit from Underwood's system. All joking aside, a versatile guy like Smith, with that aforementioned combination of skills and traits, really DOES seem ready-made for an interchangeable system, much more so than guys with more impressive single skills, like JCL's shooting, or with obvious holes like JCL's ball-handling.
