This one hurts. Wish he had stayed; wish him the best elsewhere.
"Once promising" is being generous. "Much discussed" is more like it. Illinois recruited guys there and tried to cultivate relationships and what did it get us? Nothing. 2 mediocre years out of one player. There was never a pipeline.

Yea, when Underwood got here I heard some say how much it would benefit JCL. But Underwood's offense is predicated on freeing up space and getting to the basket, which is the weakest part of JCL's offensive game. Sure, open shots will be created in Underwood's offense, and an overall boost in off. efficiency is good for everyone on the team (rising tide lifts all boats), but I don't think JCL stood to gain disproportionately.
My assumption is that JCL had a tight bond with Groce, and between his exit and the influx of guards coming in, he decided he was best served going elsewhere. That's certainly his prerogative as an amateur athlete.
Here's hoping we don't block the kid from going to DePaul or ND or wherever else he wants to play. Regardless of the reason, it just comes off as spiteful. Google "Cam Johnson" for proof.

You have Alstork plus 3 guards (TJL, SMith, Frazier), possibly 4 (add Damonte) with rumors all over the place that Ayo is top priority for next year. JCL will need minutes and touches if he wants to play pro (not just NBA, but Europe). So, not a big surprise.
JCL represented very well, on and off the court. Great kid, so best of luck to him and hope things work out at his next stop. My guess would be that he transfers to a program where he could get major minutes and visibility, at a fairly high level but not necessarily P5. If I had to guess, Butler or DePaul.

Best of luck to him good player. Wish he could of worked on his handle more, should benefit from the sit out year. Nothing but dribbling drills.

The chemistry issue occurs to me as well. For better or worse its pretty evident that Brad Underwood's personality is light years from John Groce. Most of us would probably welcome that change after being less than satisfied by the effort put forth at times by recent Groce led teams and the impression that he may have been a bit too much of a players coach. Still, these guys have to work for that dude for the next few years of their lives and maybe Underwood simply isn't JCL's cup of tea.
IMHO a better move for JCL instead of sitting out a year would have been to suck it up and stay for a year, get his Business degree (that he supposedly covets) and grad transfer.
The big assumption would be that he can graduate in 3 years with a business degree, which if I had to guess, may not be possible. Especially given that he was accepted into the major late.
And more power to him. Gives him a clean slate and an opportunity to improve. Overall we're short on depth. Anything could happen.

Frontcourt? Absolutely. But we have a lot more depth and talent at guards than previous years.
Doesn't work that way.
Have to sit full year, play 18-19 season with 2 years available.

None of the returning players on this roster are worth pitching a fit over losing. If you are planning on winning Big 10 titles in a few years I wouldnt lose any sleep. I suspect that this staff will replace whoever transfers just fine. May take a little time but I believe that.
Waiting on Alstork? In the unlikely event that is so, that's very gallant, but still strange.
