Well, he didn't do much to quell the the notion that he's better suited for the pen, but there's no doubting how nasty his raw stuff is. Lopez labored through 6 but worked some good hitters over tonight.

Where did Nicky Delmonico come from?! Dude is on .

I am sure others can provide more specifics, but an article I read stated he was a high draft pick somewhere, but struggled with personal issues. At one minor league stop (Houston?) he was even booted off the team because they could not get hold of him for several days to a week plus Iirc.

Hopefully he has his personal issues resolved and is ready to play baseball. Might be a good DH for the future. 3B and LF seem to be his spots, but he is also not so great in the field.

I've read his story and hope he can find success with the Sox. Drafted by Orioles, traded to Brewers for K Rod, suspended 50 games for amphetamines and released (on his request) and then signed with Sox in 2015.

He's been a pleasant surprise considering the elite prospects the Sox actually do have.

Eloy! Kid is on fire after coming over to the good side. His ETA has always looked like 2019, but if he keeps destroying the baseball he could be up end of next year.

Willie Harris has me excited:

The way he carries himself on and off the field, in the clubhouse, the way he interacts with his teammates — this guy is special. And I’m not just saying he’s [going to be] a mediocre major league baseball player. I’m talking superstar. I’m talking big time baseball player.

We have time. If I were running the show, I'd have him start next year at AA. If he continues to shine, move up to AAA mid year, then September call up.

Be patient

I'm with you 100% on the time line. I honestly think the issue is going to be his bat forcing the issue. And that will be the best problem to have to try and figure out.

Everbody planning to sit back relax and strap it down for Giolito tonight?

Not a bad debut. Encouraged by 0 BBs despite not being able to locate curveball real well.

Also encouraged by Rodon's last few starts. His slider the other day was looking filthy.
Good but not great start. If Coop can fix a few small things, he can be a really good starter for us.

And Rodon has definitely been showing why he can be a front line ace. When he is tossing the slider like that, he can dominate hitters both sides of the plate. Especially if he's locating his fastball with it.

Future is definitely bright, just need a few guys to develop along the way...

Spot on from what I saw. Giolito locates that breaking stuff a little better early on, hitters can't sit on his fast ball third time around. A few minor adjustments away from being a really solid start. 23 year olds with command of 3 plus offerings are a rare commodity.

Loved his mechanics and delivery too. The plane he gets on his fastball adds a lot to what would otherwise be an average pitch. I imagine to the batter it's like a ball being dropped off a top of a building.

I said to a buddy he could be a rich man's Gavin Floyd.

At first blush I felt disappointed on the better version of GFloyd. Went back and looked at his numbers and not a bad comp.

If we fast forward to 2019/20 and Giolito is a solid #3 in the rotation, the Sox pitching staff will be looking good. That also means Rodon and Kopech are killing it in the 1 and 2 spot.

On a side not, I always find filling out future lineups on the baseball side of things way more enjoyable compared to guessing Illinois Basketball lineups 2-3 years out.

Nice article on Rodon's improvement. I cannot wait for Rodon to be the ace of the staff/game 1 starter of the 2021 WS. :D

And agree with you on the future lineups. Well, at least starting with this season with the influx of elite prospects. :thumb:
