Just curious, does the practice facility stay open all day. I wonder if anyone has idea of how the guys work out prior to the official start of practice starts. Figure they have strength and conditioning going and shooting, wonder if we have any idea if they play pickup too?;)

I know in the Weber years the players had keys or cards or keycards that gave them 24/7 access. I don't know if it's changed but I can't see why it would.

So in the article he says, "The Illinois men's basketball team will begin its fall workouts next week in preparation for the official start of the season on Sept. 29."

What does that mean, what is official about Sept. 29? What changes or whatever?

The number of hours the NCAA allows for contact with the student athletes

I'm too lazy to look it up, but I believe the midnight madness that used to be around mid-Oct has changed to end of Sept, and there are still a couple hours weekly allowed prior to that. The reason given was so coaches could be flexible and give time off, rather than pack practice into the month leading up to the season.

Thanks to Calvin and 618MattD. There is so much I don't know although I kinda suspected something along what you said

I'm sad to say I checked out Mizzou bball twitter page. They constantly post videos of practice, player intros, drills, etc. it seems like Illinois has been fairly quiet. (Sadly) I want videos to get hyped for the season! Is that too much to ask!?

The Werner interview was pretty light overall. Listened to it over the weekend, and you didn't miss much if you didn't.

Here are my takeaways. Note that I'm basing this off my read of everything I've heard/seen so far, not just this one interview.

[snip]

Personally, I like his interviews. He doesn't say things he shouldn't, and leaves me with the impression that most of the talking will be done on the court. Isn't getting ahead of himself, and seems to enjoy and respect the process.

Thanks for the recap. Busy week for me so I doubly appreciate it.

Actually, I like how the Illini Bball Twitter page is quiet. Not revealing everything, unlike Mizzou. Whoever manages the social media side of Illini Men's Basketball does a great job with it (I'm guessing DB). Nothing to be concerned about.

Reveal what to who? That stuff is all for the fans. I wish we had more as well.

Is it possible it's quiet because they haven't hired anyone for that social media job yet? Wasn't that open for a really long time?

Always nice to read stuff like this.

Here's an article where college coaches talk about how great of a hire Brad Underwood was.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-b...onference-school-made-the-best-coaching-hire/ …

Let me start by saying I think Archie is a great hire for Indiana, and if Illinois had hired him I would've been very happy. He was clearly one of, if not thee, top coaching candidate this year. With that said, I don't think his success at Indiana is such a given as Gary Parrish believes.

5-5 vs ranked teams during regular season. Never played more than 2 games against ranked teams in one year. Only 2 wins against ranked power conference opponents are vs Baylor, and Vanderbilt.

Has only played 2 true road games against ranked opponents: VCU and SLU, both victories

2-3 vs ranked teams in the tournament. The two victories are the year of their E8 run against Ohio State and Syracuse. Beat OSU by 1pt, and Syracuse by 2 pts.

5 tournament victories including a play-in game: 1 pt, 1pt, 2 pts, 10pts, 13pts

Upset in first round of last two tournaments.

Only 2 victories versus the Big10 (Iowa, and Minnesota).

The A10 has averaged the 7th best conference RPI during Archie's time there.

I hate to get into what-ifs, but... If Vee Stanford misses his layup, or Craft's buzzer beater rolls in then Dayton is knocked out first round, and the E8 run never happens. Is he the same candidate without that E8?

I just don't see him challenging his teams enough during his time at Dayton to believe with little doubt that the same success will follow him to the Big10. It's absolutely the hire Indiana had to make, but I will not be shocked if he ends up having less or similar success to Crean.

Archie was the best hire this year. Maybe the gap isn't large, but hes got a pedigree unmatched by the other hires.

That being said, success at Indiana is almost impossible. Although I agree with their fan base that Crean wasn't getting the job done, he had plenty of great teams. It was finally time for a change their but he was by no means their worst coach in recent memory. The expectations are extremely high there. Its gonna take a lot of work by Archie to sustain the kind of success expected.

While we do have pretty high expectations, theres so much apathy around our basketball teams recent performance that even making the tournament for a few years would be seen as a pretty massive accomplishment. I think BU will start to raise expectations by himself. Thats always better than having to meet some sort of requirement.
