If you showed me a picture of Frank Williams now or when he played, I couldn't tell you who he was. Does that make you feel better?

Did you watch the video...it had nothing to do with a picture it was about Frank's name.

Any updates on the open gym for Ayo?

It was an individual workout. He ran through mostly shooting drills. Showed a nice touch. The crowd lined the Ubben balcony. Cheers of I-L-L A-Y-O and We want Ayo. Clapping to help him get through full court layup drill.

After it was over, he thanked the crowd for coming, said it meant a lot to him, and ended with “why not me?”

No UI players there. Coaches had to stay in office, too.

I want to support Writing Illini, but that writing style hurts my heart.

Yeah. I like the points though. Heck of an article about Brunson done by Henricksen though on the suntimes site.

Past coaches performance has no indication of future success of new coaching staff. Rah, Rah could not focus long enough to do the job. BU has a track record of his coaching success is his resume, his style and demeanor, yet to be seen by us here, have made him a solid choice.

Recruitment is something that he will be able to do at:illinois:, once his team shows the product he has to offer. All that think he can't close have short memories. Having recruits that want to play at:illinois:, are the ones he wants. No begging, no promises, just players that are dedicated to becoming better , willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish that.

Our 2017 team are about ready to show all, hard work and discipline, are the way to win. Not cheering, and attaboys, this team is what we have been wanting to see for many years.
;):illinois:

I've seen several references to the highlighted lately, and it makes me cringe each time. It reminds me too much of Weber supposedly telling some of his top targets that we wanted them, but did not need them. Why even go there?! That is not what these recruits want to hear, whether it is true or not.
While Weber didn't need them to field a team, he obviously needed them to be successful and to keep his job.
I'm not insinuating BU is saying this to any of these recruits, and I certainly hope he isn't. I do believe BU is a different kind of coach and we will finally start to see really good basketball on the court again.
If this staff can land Ayo after securing Smith, the recruiting results for BU will be better than BW and JG combined before even coaching a single game for the Illini.

Groce was a great recruiter just had bad luck closing. He gets one of those top PG prospects just once he still has a job here. But with that being said I love Brad Underwood and the new staff!!! Wrap up AYO and we back.

I agree with some who have stated that winning =recruiting advantage. Cuonzo, JG and others can recruit,... but coaching and player development is more important, and eventually turns into a big recruiting advantage after the real coaching results are revealed..

Doncic is already projected to be a Top 10 when he decides, doubt he ever plays college ball for anyone.

Doncic has already turned pro long time ago, so no eligible to play college, although just 18. He is already a big star in one of Euroleague's best teams and one of the best pro teams outside the NBA (Read Madrid). Just won the European championship with Slovenia playing against the top national teams, many with NBA players. He is a guaranteed top-5 pick in next year's NBA draft, and IMO I would be extremely surprised if he does not go top-3, possibly no. 1. He is that good.

But as far as recruiting, it just shows how far ahead he is fundamentally compared to current top college recruits and players.

He was not a "great" recruiter, not was he a really bad recruiter. In recruiting, strategies, in-state, out-of-state, etc. are all irrelevant. They really do not differentiate you. At the end, it does not matter who you missed on, or how many, it is who you got. Illinois has been has been way down in talent compared to the periods in our history when we were consistently good (most of the 80s, 2000-05)... with the lone exception of 2010-11 IMO.

Groce's tenure was no exception. He showed promise early on, and did get some good recruits (not exceptional) but pretty much all wings. He had tremendous gaps in his recruiting, especially at PG, and C, two of the most important positions. By the time he started filling some of those gaps (i.e., Frazier, DW, joining TJL.... adding Tilmon and being in excellent shape with Smith), his fate had already been sealed. It was too late.

Well...there is a 5 star recruit on campus.

And our football team will probably suck until at least next year so this isn't too surprising.

Sure, what could possibly appeal to a recruit about fans showing up to a basketball practice to chant your name on a football game day?

Groce the great recruiter never landed a top tier pg and took 4 or 5 years to land a 3 star pg. Also recruited players who were one dimensional or lacked several fundamentals.

I realize this is a bridge too far, but I really do feel like it might be premature to compare Groce's recruiting over 5 years to Underwood's recruiting over less than 1 year. We should probably stop doing it.
