He has to worry about his own situation, and that's fair. Ayo is consensus first rounder, and potentially loterry, so barring a career-threatening injury, he's gone. If Miller wants insurance against Ayo staying, I would think it'd be better to get him signed with the understanding he can re-evaluate if Ayo doesn't declare, rather than let it be a hold up. That's up to the Admin & coaches, but I think I'd take that risk if it were my call.
If he’s legitimately wanting to take that approach, he has zero incentive to sign.

I agree, he shouldn't sign, but why not orally commit, like Villanueva did? That would help us gain recruiting momentum and wouldn't bind him if Ayo gets hurt.
Well, the Illini already have 4/4 crystal balls for Miller....

I think your definition of "commit" is not the standard one -- nobody publicly announces "I am going to play there unless X happens."

I think your definition of "commit" is not the standard one. 4/4 recruiting writers predicting he will commit is not the same as committing, full stop.

sacraig, we are on the same page. Indications are that he has told the staff he wants to come here unless Ayo doesn't go pro, and all I am saying is that the people who are demanding he make this a public commitment of any kind are out of line.

Sure but from the standpoint of optics, it is basically a non-commitment. Maybe he gave that, ahem, silent verbal, but there is no way to use that for recruiting purposes without him making it public.

I think from a recruiting stand point we'll get plenty of mileage out of it for the 202 class which is principally what matters. I don't think we're necessarily needing anything more for this fall.

Hopefully the "Ayo going pro" question is settled in people's minds by the first couple B1G games.

He is going pro unless he sustains an injury.

Miller, Curbelo, Hawkins.:shield:

Staff already starting to focus on 2021. Props to BU, Chin and OA for putting this class together.

I believe that. I'm just saying that perhaps Miller won't believe it until he sees a real movement of Ayo up the draft boards. Despite some comments, Ayo is not a consensus first rounder at this time. Many have him there, but others don't.

Seems like the implication is that Miller is going to wait to commit until after the Fall Signing Period, once some of the season has played out and it’s clear Ayo is going pro.

Maybe I missed someone else saying this, but this still seems plenty risky for Illinois. He’s a Top 50 guy; if we don’t lock him up now we risk better schools coming calling in the Spring. The last thing we need is Michigan or a Blue Blood sniffing around and giving us competition. Am I crazy? That seems like a very real possibility if we don’t lock this up in the fall signing period.

Hate to pick on you again man but I don’t think there would be enough minutes for all those guys. Ayo, Frazier, Curbelo, Miller, Griffin and Da’Monte at the guard spots would be too crowded for someone’s liking.
Also, your whole NBA analysis...I could not follow that and definitely would not agree with it. AM just participated in a Team USA camp and walked away looking like one of the top players there. He’s ranked like 32 in 247composite and has been ranked a 5 star previously. The ESPN guys, formerly of DraftExpress and probably most reliable guys in the industry, had AM in the late half of the first round in their initial 2021 Mock Draft that they just recently released. Hes more developed physically than Ayo was at the same age. Kid looks the part already. He’s going to want to play right away and play a lot.

There wouldn't be enough minutes, which is why there is hesitation, because I think Millers camp is telling him he is 1 and done...if he truly thougth he was a 2-3 player than PRO, I don't think the Ayo to Pro or not factors in?

Yes he will want to play alot...and right away, hence the hesitation of Ayo PRO or not..
24/7 rankings are not the end all be all for ANY NBA drafting person I can guarantee that, players are drafted for potential, need, fit...24/7 and Rivals both have him ranked by stars as a SG which is my case.
AM is a combo guard and a damn good one...he will NEED to be a PG at the PRO level.
Playing Time (Miller/Griffin/Williams) could all be slotted into a 2-3 position as far as play if needed, Ayo/Trent/Curbelo at PG for one year with Trent/Curbelo/Miller the following if Ayo didn't turn after this year and waited yet another.
Miller is more developed as a scorer than Ayo, not sure as a PG, and late first round prediction could also mean no first round...which doesn't scream 1 and done to me?

This would be a very Illinois thing

It’s got to be voluntary on both sides. Miller will do what he wants to do. He’s got that right. Illini are fine waiting when the alternative is filling the scholly with someone of less talent.

Even if he didn't turn PRO, we would still being losing DreFeliz...there still would be minutes. The only way this hesitation makes any sense to me if Adam Miller believes he is a 1 and done...if he believes this, then that year of sitting for some minutes vs playing for alot of minutes makes sense?

If his handlers are telling him he is a 1 and done, and the belief is there, then he HAS to pick a school where he plays starter minutes from the get go...that said, I believe he is obviously a hell of a player, but not a 1 and done, anymore than Ayo was or I thought he was. AM, is a still at the end of the day a 6'3-4" CG, with PG skills....he is not a 5* PG with CG skills. Drafting 1 and done's this factor makes a difference. Alot of CG's with that size with similiar skill sets to compete against in the draft process....less TRUE PG.

All that mentioned, I still hope like HELL that we get him, and I love the shooter/athlete he is and what he could bring to the ILLINI, and what his committment would mean as far as furthering the rebuild of our storied program.
If Miller and his handlers believe he is a one and done, why wouldn’t they also believe he can earn starter minutes, regardless of the current roster construction?
Seems to me that a guy who is good enough to play among best 360 players in the world would be arguably the best player on just about any team in the nation.

Far more concerning is Curbelo and his waiting to sign until the Spring. This is the last year of Antigua's 3 year contract and he is only making in the low $300's. He was used to the $900's as HC at USF. My guess is no Antigua and there is no Curbelo.

Oh totally agree. Obviously he’s worth waiting. But I’m sure the staff would love to have this thing wrap up in November before even more suitors get involved.

Right. But he’s expected to shut it down in the fall, isn’t he?
