Why are you guys wasting time/energy on why he came here? Thats Mizzous problem not ours. Does everything need to be turned into a soap opera?

Because this....

I mean 2 things can be true. Illinois can be very excited about hiring Walters. Mizzou can be perfectly fine with losing him. It doesn't mean he's an amazing coach or a terrible coach. It means the decision made sense to all parties involved
There is frequently a sour grapes spin- we’ve done it ourselves countless times “we didn’t want him anyway”
The truth is they gave him a 3 year deal at 900k - the most on the staff to keep him there last year with Drink- with a bunch of buyout clauses if he went to an SEC vs non-SEC school etc (we likely owe a $225k buyout btw). That doesn’t sound like a coach you don’t mind losing. If one year under Covid changed their opinion of him then good for us!

In reality if he had another top 20 defensive year, he’s likely only leaving for a HC gig and they are likely fighting harder to keep him - so it’s to our benefit we got one of the rising star DC’s in all of college football because of timing on both ends!

This. I get that there’s possibly some truth in the win-win idea. BUT if they want to save face by playing it off like Walters may not have had some security there bc Drink wants his “own guy” fine, but you can’t have it both ways and that could potentially mean that a guy like Brick might be in the same boat and would have the same incentive to leave.

Maybe you guys don’t dislike missou as much as I do.

Nice work, kitty, love that right jab. Rope-a-dope. Tiger could take a punch, no glass jaw but had multiple chances to throw a left jab to the kitty's belly and follow up with a roundhouse right. But it's ovah! Down goes tiger! I wish Howard Cosell were with us to analyse this. Reminds me of Ali-Foreman fight.

I'm glad you brought this up. As weird as it is to say this about a 34 year old coordinator, there's almost this feeling that we actually bought low on him. Last year with covid and their roster situation, it made him look worse than he actually is and probably made him more available than he should've been

Didn't Beason leave. Am I confusing different players? I only saw a Twitter handle not the name. Going to the draft.
I think you may be thinking of Hobbs.

Btw--love your username. My aunt & uncle used to live in a community outside of Peoria named Lake Camelot. Assume it's the same. Brings back good memories.

So, Mizzou coach wanted his own DC - fair enough. So, did he call the IL HC and request him to take his DC off his staff?
Mizznoz boards were saying HC wanted to part ways amicably and that was several days ago. They were expecting him to leave, possibly to Illinois.

Exactamundo. I was under the impression the HC at Mizzou respected him and wished him well. The fans were happy with his 2019 performance, were understanding and provided reasons for drop off this year and wished him well as well. I'm looking forward to seeing what his D looks like. I think he'll recruit well. Good get. Wait and see how it pans out. Were people in freak mode again??? Wish I had time to read all the back posts. I think BB's staff is shaping up pretty well with a big ? at OC. It's BB's ship. I'm looking forward to what we look like spring/fall.

Have any salary numbers been announced? I have to imagine BB still has a pretty good amount of money left to get probably 2 high paying position coaches, maybe for STC and a defensive guy like DL.

Stop being sensible. We'll be having none of that here. Lol

My assumption is they'll wait until the entire staff is in place before revealing salary details.

This is a solid hire for Illinois, pretty happy about it. I haven’t always been able to say that about football hires.

Mizzou has been a better football school for...? Hard to justify being DC at Mizzou is worse, or even on a level field as Illinois.

That being said, this is far from hiring a guy who got fired at Mizzou. Like others have said, just because Miznoz wanted to part ways and we wanted to hire him doesnt mean we are getting spoils. Coaching changes can shove even the best coaches out on the street. Not that thats exactly the case there, but I'd rather look at his body of work in a P5 conference than try and make sense of who won the battle here.

I'm in DeKalb, high school of Dre Brown. Can't sub teach because of you know what. But I've promoted Illini in this here town for years for free, but if there's so much money floating around, can't U of I send some to a retiree who's an Illini nut in DeKalb?

KIDDING!

Surprised there hasn't been any interviews with Walters yet. They were on it with the other hires. Yet to hear from Tank as well.

Thank you Dbell1981. What does it matter what Miz. wants or didn't want. This blog was so much fun years ago when we were all ILL. fans and hoped the best for the teams. When did everyone's opinion start mattering so much. Good lord, believe me it just doesn't seem so much fun, but kind of of argumentive. Believe me guys your opinions don't mean so much.
