Illini Golfers in the Pros

With an eagle at the last, he is definitely playing well. Maybe he just lacks the confidence of a winner right now. He seems to have a hard time keeping doubles off the card. Those are killers.

We got a couple Illini back in action, sorry that the results aren't better.

D.A. opened with a +3 and is going to need to go pretty low to make the cut. problem with DA right now is that he just doesn't make enough birdies. He can scramble and stay around par on difficult tracks but when others go low he has to be flawless to make the cut.

The other news, and this one is disappointing because I root for this guy, is that Dylan Meyer through 3 rounds is not in contention at LocaliQ series championship. Winner of this tournament and the top two point winners of the season get sponsor exempts into a PGA Tournament. Meyer shot a 76 to start and is stuck trying to recover and tied for 39. All of these 3rd tier tours are basically shots in the dark and you have to win big to graduate up from them. I'm hoping his fighting spirit keeps him pressing on. Very talented player.

I don't see either of our Thomas's playing in South Africa. Are they just taking a break??

you know I'm not sure, but the Sunshine tour swing is not popular amongst the top pros.

I did not even know that the Dubai Tournament was happening....top 25 for Pieters.

I've basically determined to keep the comments on this thread to the different men's tour for what I follow and haven't been including Strick but he showed he still can compete at certain venues. top 20 this week at the Mayakoba. He had an excellent weekend. He isn't playing the regular tour a ton but has two top 20s this year.

late to the party with this but Detry had a nice weekend in Dubai and is now the highest ranked Illini golfer in the world. Just nudged out Pieters.

Nice 7 under par 63 today for Nick Hardy in the Sony Open in Hawaii. Birdied last four holes. 4 shots out of the lead. I guess he Monday qualified to get into the field.

I did not see that he qualified. This is a great round and that has him in contention heading into to moving day. Should be a fun watch tonight. hopefully he can put together a solid round and get some TV time on Sunday.

and when you looked at his round he was on the cut line standing on the 12th tee. He then proceeds to birdie 5 of the last 7 and 4 in. a row to close it out. Strong work.

Nick having a good third round. Getting a lot of TV face time. Nice to see that block I on the leaderboard.

4 under 66 today...12 under total, 6 shots back of leader. He'll probably have to shoot 66 or lower Sunday just to maintain his position as the pros are tearing that course up. Two 61's today. Nice paycheck if he can shoot a good score tomorrow. I think he's only made 2 bogeys all week, both on the back nine today.

He had a bogey during his first round, but still very consistent.

What was impressive about yesterday's round is that he followed each of those bogeys with a birdie. He has been doing that on the Korn Ferry all year. Not going crazy low when in position to win but not allowing the rounds to get away from him either. He has shown a ton of mental toughness and looks like a grinder. I think, if he gets there this year, he could have a long run on the tour. This is a Monday qualifier run and that is impressive. A top 20 would be huge from a fiscal standpoint. With his solid play on the korn ferry, sitting 15th, he is in very good shape to to be one of the top 25. He missed the top 10 which granted some options for PGA Tour events though limited. Making a good check will easy some of the worry for this season. And, unless it has changed recently, a top 10 gets him into next week. Which would be huge. The Korn Ferry doesn't start back up until mid-February so this is all gravy for Nick.

A nice top 14 finish with 4 rounds in the 60's. Lots of things to be happy about. Hopefully that will get noticed and possibly a chance to get into another tourney before the Korn Ferry starts back up. He has really improved his game over the last few years. I don't know if he will be a player like Stricker, but he looks like he might have the game to make a nice living on the tour.

What an important finish for Hardy. Made about 70k with those 3 consecutive birds to close out the round.

This has kinda been his game for the last year or so. Very solid golf, putting himself within striking distance and then not firing low to push the leaders. Instead, he scuffles a little only to right the ship and put together a respectable round. Big tourney for him and shows that his form of last year may carry over nicely into the spring.

By the way, watch out 2021 I think the next superstar has arrived and it is Joaquin Neimann. He has a swagger to him and shots that others don't. I followed him at the 2018 Quicken Loans for a few holes and he it sounded noticeably different off his club. I know that I am not going too far out on a limb saying this, he is 22, already has a win, a boatload of top 10s and was a former number 1 Amateur in the world, but this kid and Morikawa are gonna be dynamite to watch for the next couple of decades.

Yes. last year on the Korn Ferry, Nick would put solid rounds on the first two rounds, have a really good round on day three to get into contention but could never capitalize on day 4. But yesterday he finished strong which hopefully has taught him on how to finish a tourney. A nice paycheck to start the year. Nick hopefully can take the next step this year and win a tourney. He has the talent

Official money for Hardy was $113,850. Great start of 2021 for this young man.

I agree on Niemann and would add Viktor Hoveland as another with superstar potential.
